Though i do intend to go back to NY ( i have family there), the difference in the way people behave there and say here, is very poignant. For example, some dude rammed me with a shopping cart because he wanted to get in line before me.

The other half of the time, i was either listening to latinos bitch about how blacks think they own everything, not understanding why none of the asians speak english except that one mildly attractive one, and having white people go out of their way to ignore me, though i suppose that's better than them outright avoiding me. As for black people, well, they just didn't trust me. And, yea, and everyone was just rude, but i suppose that's life in the metropolis.

You get desensitized in a very short time if you live in NYC, and you will grow to not giving a shit to strangers because there are just too many around, as opposed to knowing everyone and everything that goes on in a small rural town.

I'm from new york and I got plenty of that fuck off attitude when I would go to Virginia for work, but I didn't assume it was just the type of people there. You're going to find assholes everywhere, but don't generalize and say its everyone in a city. There were plenty of really nice people in Virginia as there are in NYC. I'll admit that you find more assholes in touristy spots though.

When you're here, make sure you do the following: walk around the village, go see a Yankees game in the Bronx, and if you like music, go see some local bands play in Brooklyn or on the lower east side. And yeah do the empire state building. I lived in the area my whole life, but went there for the first time two years ago. It was pretty awesome.

As someone who goes to NYC for work on a constant basis, the people there really aren't as bad as some are making it out to be.
I've never had problems getting directions when needed or suggestions on good food too, believe me there is some amazing food there. All kinds of little places. The best though is when you got someone there who actually knows what's going on, they take you off the beaten path and thats when you have real fun.

Walk / Subway everywhere. If it's too long take a cab. You'll have fun there, God knows I look forward to my Feb / July every year.

If you have some disposal income, you should really check out many of the excellent restaurants in Greenwich village. They cost about $20-$35 a meal, including gratuity. I find then usnig "Yelp" on my iphone, if you don't have one, the closet means of finding them would be typing in "restaurant, greenwich village, nyc" in google maps.

Hopstop.com nuff said. If you need to get anywhere by bus, cab, train. Go there and scout your route. It usually knows about weekend construction and all that.

As to the rude comment.

Yep, I'm rude. Sorry. If you are standing there with your goddamn camera staring at the sky in front of a subway entrance, expect to get pushed the fuck out of the way. I know how long it takes me to get to work. I plan on it. If you get in the way. It's your fault.

Protip: If you are stopping on the sidewalk. Go next to the building. Don't go towards the street.

Also, try not to look like a tourist. Take 1 or 2 full days and do the sightseeing tour bus gig. Do the Statue of Liberty and all the major stuff. After that, find places that we've recommended or you've discovered and go wild. People in NYC won't bat an eye at the crazy Euro's running around having fun. We will notice you quietly standing in our way holding a camera.

Another recommendation: There is this bubble tea place called TKettle on St. Mark's near the Astor Place 6 train stop. Go there and get some bubble tea and some Korean BBQ in the same shop. Shit is bangin.

whatever ya do avoid hard rock cafe like the plague. NYC's hard rock has shitty food and even shittier service. I suppose the best advice i can give is though, avoid central park after dark. Not only will some jackass try to rob ya but you probably won't even see em. I seen some bum's laying around central park that were so black and or dirty you couldn't even see em unless they smiled and this was like 3 in the afternoon.

The people saying NYC cops are nice; show me a nice NYC cop and i'll believe it. So far any NYC cop i ran into while visiting family up there were some of the rudest bastards i ever met. They're even worse on the 4th of july or any other major holiday where people flock into NYC.

like any city, please be aware of your surroundings. i've had lots of ppl who grew up here get mugged and beat up, just dont be stupid. but you know sometimes shit happens...my friend was walking in home from soho around 2am (not late here) and soho is a pretty nice area but some guy just randomly ran up towards him and punched him w/brass knuckles and stole his wallet :\

Basically repeating what a few people said already. Stay in Brooklyn or Queens and take the subway everywhere. It'll get you basically anywhere you want to go in 30-45mins or less.

If you want to find a good spot that's got easy access to the city and has great food try Astoria or Long Island City. Trains will get you everywhere, if you get an unlimited metro card for the week or two you are there you'll be able to hop on and off buses and trains all day, very handy for tourists. I'm currently on vacation in Ireland visiting family but will fill you in on a ton of spots when I get back. feel free to PM me, what other interests do you and your gf have?
