From world trade center to central park, it's about 4.6miles and $20, depending on the traffic.

i wouldn't suggest taking the cab too often, it can get pricey. just go with the subway or bus, it's cheap and like others have said that's where the fun is at. also, you get to experience how it feels like to live in NY, most new yorker commutes daily by the MTA (subway & bus).

taking the subway can be eventful, just a little hint/tip, you don't necessary have to give money to bums/people who are asking for donations/crappy ass break dancer/musicians etc... i mean if they really that entertaining to you then why not, but please don't give into encouraging crappy entertainers to pursuit any further with their career, it's better for the city and for your wallet.

few more things about the transportation system:

    1) please don't take more than one seat, not even for your luggage or pet, you CAN get a ticket for it and it's rude. i have seen so many tourists taking up more seats in a crowded train than necessary because of their stupid luggage.

    2) traveling on weekend by the MTA might be confusing for tourists. during the weekend is when most railroad works happen so some of the trains are rerouted. this goes for buses too. try to get a hold of a subway map, trust me, it comes in handy.

oh...and make sure to take pics of the night skyline of NYC.

That's what I'm going to do in daytime! I was asking cause I think it would be safer using cabs at night instead of taking the subway!

I'm with everyone else on this one, stick to the subway when you can because it is just very convenient. Cabs are fun for the night time when you want to see the city lights though, so if you have the cash to burn on your trip you can do that. Times square is particularly awesome to see at night. If you're there, you can also hit up Carmines in the theater district, which is a great family style Italian restaurant; not exactly cheap, but it's damned good.

Always a chance you could end up in the Cash Cab if you take the taxi around too.

like has been stated already cabs in NYC are very costly. From my experience there the subways are fairly safe. They aren't as bad as everyone makes em out to be. Just if possible try to travel with a group at night on the subways if safety is that much a issue to you. Anytime i been into NYC i always been with other people be it my parents or aunts, uncles, and cousins.

kinda curious, we got anyone from staten island in here? Used to live there 15 years ago when i was a kid. curious as to if anything changed there or if the pollution and the landfill got worse/bigger. i know they buried the 9/11 debris on staten island on the side of the island closest to cateret, NJ. My aunt is the assistant mayor for carteret and actually aided in having the debris covered over cause the stench was annoying the citizens over in carteret. Only other thing i know staten island got since i lived there was a A&W restaurant.

The smell is MUCH better nowadays. That was about a year ago though. Better from years past when I used to visit my Aunt down there. That was like 8-10 years ago though.

the last i drove through staten island was like a year and a half ago when i went out to long island for my grandmother's funeral. did notice more factories since when i lived there. i'm surprised the apartments built into the hills outside fort wadsworth are still there. like how they built those. cool idea using staten island's rocky landscape to build into. talking bout staten island is making me wanna visit there next time i go up to NY. I live down in NC these days.
