NAS storage

Sooooo ive been looking on newegg at the following

im sure some of you have network storage and im wondering how the setup was for it. im certainly not a noob when it comes to lan setups but ive never used something like this so im wondering if its very complicated to setup thru my linksys or my dlink

Its really just a HD hooked up to an ethernet port, if you can handle basic network configurations, it's pretty easy.

do i have to configure it to have a static IP? and if so do all my other comps also have to be static to access it?

i guess its based on each different NAS unit, ive also read some pretty dissapointing reviews on the particular unit i was interested in.

do you have any suggestions on a particular product? i want to use it for my wife to store all of her videos and pics somewhere off of her laptop without having just a external drive. i would also like to use it for some of my own storage needs (obv not my porn tho i would want her to peep my blacks on blondes collection)

You can set the static IPs with your router rather then your comp. You just look for their MAC addresses (no, not apple-mac , these are tied to their network interface cards) and assign those to individual IPs if you want to. For example I gave my main comp 192.168.1.11 and every other thing connected has some number greater then 11.

Configuration within the NAS varies but once you find/assign its IP in your router you just type that IP in a browser and follow the instructions. It should come with instructions on what to do but usually it can be done without having to run a cd. Mine came with a cd but I never used it since it was simple to set up and use as is. I think all the cd software does is look for your NAS on your network and direct you to it with your browser, which is something you can do yourself anyway.
