HOUSTON – A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it. Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

He stabbed his girlfriend and kid, and ripped out their hearts. Mentally ill or not, he's better off not in society, I think. Besides, this shouldn't come as a surprise. Everyone knows Texas doesn't put up with the same shit other states do, and let people get away with nearly as much.

If Texas weren't so... southern and rednecky and bibley, with those accents and cowboy hats and religion and all that, I'd suggest other states be like Texas.

Assuming "day1" is the day he was arrested, why did he wait til then to seek help? Getting help after you kill your wife and 1 year old kid is a bit late. Let the peice of shit die. This is the same problem I have with a lot of insantiy pleas (although they're used sparingly). It's a good debate in an ethics class.

If he begged for help, he's capable of rational thought. He had a history of mental problems and capable of rational thoughts, he waited too long to seek help. If he had seeked help when the problems arose (and was medicated) and the medication stopped working, I'll bite on this.

Let's mark two points down.

You think, apparently, that people with mental health problems are incapable of rational thought or else they wouldn't have mental health problems, which means you apparently think they're crazy 24/7 or else they're lying, and in addition to that, you think, apparently, that it's common for people with mental health problems to seek help for their problems.

Also, you think there's some time limit in which they must seek help for their mental health problems or else they're just trolling.

No, you're assuming a lot. I'm saying that despite being crazy (which he obviously is), he is also obviously capable of rationalizing a situation. He's had a history of mental health problems, has he not had a single rational thought process since the mental issues began, only after the murders did he start rationalizing situations? If he's always been capable of rationalizing, the first time he rationalized that he needed help was AFTER he killed his wife and kids? Who's to blame if they seek help or not if they can reason on their own that help is needed (and he did after the murders) and they don't seek it. It's their problem. Let him die.
