Looking for some information on the past 2 years.

Well pretty much, I have played FF11 in quite some time.

The last time I played it was when Aht Urhgan was released.
I for about a month after the release of the expansion.

Pretty much I'm looking to find out some information on new gear and money making.

Imagine you are starting the game over at the current state with no gear, gil, or linkshell.
Where would you start and what gear, if there is any new, would you aim for?

    Thanks!

Depends how you're planning on playing (casual or end-game?) and where you left off.
In general you can't go wrong with getting WotG sorted, run your butt to an olden city and sign up for campaigns. Spend an evening unlocking maws and getting the campaign warps by travelling around zones, if you plan on doing end-game most LSes require you to have access to all WotG zones for camping Dark Ixion/Sandworm. If you play casually, campaigns are an awesome way to snag quick XP here and there. Try out some campaigns and get cracking on quests. If your job appreciates inventory space or you like to farm a lot you can quest most of the items needed for the most recently added Gobbie bag quests (adaman ingot, angel/deathstones etc.). If you're really flat broke, getting some Allied Notes (AN) and ranking up and then buying and selling AN gear will earn you some petty cash while you get a hang of playing your job(s) again in campaigns. Same with just going meriting/XPing in ToAU areas, earning Imperial Standing (IS) and selling Imperical coins on AH or trying to get lucky with some ISNMs. If you have any old friends playing drag their ass into ENMs/ISNMs/KSNMs/BCNMs if you have any seals or IS or take your chances with pickup groups. Especially with ISNMs it's not hard to get pretty decent pickups. Read up on wiki what Zeni and ZNMs are, lot of jobs can solo some of the lower tier ZNMs and some drop pretty nice bits of gear, once you have made some friends or joined a LS you can go kill the higher tier ones. If you left at ToAU release I'd guess Salvage and Nyzul are pretty new concepts for you too, read up on them. If you can gather a solid group of 6 people, Nyzul is a fairly simple way to obtain some decent gear and for many melee jobs the awesome new weaponskills.

In terms of making gil, basic farming has really changed sod all, pick a zone with mobs and go kill them. If you're a THF who likes to pick coffers then the last patch pretty much screwed you over though. Old zones are still reliable gil, there are new mining areas in ToAU (Zhayolm) but it's pretty much overran by RMT due to Khroma Ores. There's logging in both ToAU and WotG that can bring in decent gil if it's your cup of tea. If you have any crafts leveled I'd suggest you browse through FFXIAH and wiki's recipe lists, old staple goods are still the best sellers and always a solid income so nothing's changed in that aspect. Everyone needs food and shihei.

For listing new gear would help to know your jobs, there's been a metric fuckton of stuff introduced lately. Most of it is not as awesome as the older gear already in-game back in the days of ToAU release but for a casual player who doesn't camp kings a lot of viable alternatives have popped up and for middle level jobs there's been some nice surprises.

    New gear thats good: Salvage

    Money making: ISNM ENM Limbus

you prolly can earn enough gil before you make a salvage body because its rare to drop.

Kings sucks now so you pretty much have alot of spare time to go farming

Well if starting out as a fresh fresh player there's Fields of Valor. Rewards you extra exp after killing mobs on a list and also gives you a little extra gil, Also treasure caskets.
Starting players now have a NPC that gives you a free exp band and a free RR earring as well.
