It would've been great if sawyer went into the hatch then while in went back in time to when there was no hatch. Thus being put under ground, buried in dirt.

Yeah, when he found Locke he said "You told me it was a bullet" and then he says, "No I didn't" and Richard replies, "Well, then you're about to." Somehow he knew the future and he accidentally acted as if it'd already happened.
