I'm convinced the bearded man and Jacob are demi-gods of some sort. They have divine powers (healing, etc) but they can't seem to harm each other. But maybe they can be killed by mortals? So in order for the bearded man to kill Jacob, he needed to possess the body of a mortal to do it? Or maybe it was just to get back on the island.

Or maybe Beard could killed Jacob, but wanted Ben to do it in order to gain a follower. The choice Ben was given gave me the impression he was standing in front of two much more powerful beings who were using him. Satan and God, but I doubt it's as simple as 'good versus evil.'

I mean we don't really know anything about the man in black guy at all so who knows what he can do and how long / what lengths he's gone to to find the loophole. Smokey knows about memories too, but I'd say Smokey is just defense for the island in general, but who knows. Also, I think he knew where Jacob was because at the start Jacob said, "you know where I'll be." Maybe he just had to fake it for the sake of the long con.

Edit: actually about Smoke monster. He told Ben to do whatever Locke said. So maybe smokey is the man in black after all. This episode gives you so much to think about. Blargh

He had to pretend he was Locke.

This alllll goes back to something I talked about pages ago that relates to the bible. Jacob had a brother. Maybe that is his brother. But there are different variations of the story. In one variation they were rivals, and they could not kill one another. They had to have somebody else kill them but not buy bribing or anything, the person that did it had to have wanted to kill him. So that is why he talked Ben into doing it and gave him reasons.

I just can't believe how planned out it is. I mean season 1, an early episode, with Locke playing that chinese checker game with the black and white stones. This episode finally reveals the mythology's most secretive rivals both wearing black and white. fapfapfap

I've always had conflicting thoughts on Richard. I've wondered if he was Egyptian, or if he was on the Black Rock that we saw at the start of the finale. We know there will be more information on that coming next season since it seemed to throw more fuel on the feud between Jacob and...Esau?

The story of Jacob and Esau? Sons of Isaac. That would make the island if following of bibical background Paradise or Eden. The two fought with one another to see who truly was the heir of Isaac. In the story Esau was to be blessed by Isaac and given rulership over Jacob as being the first born, Jacob tricked Isaac for the blessing. It would be an interesting twist.

    Spoiler: show
I read two weeks ago in a TV magazine with an interview with Actor who plays Ben, the statue is actually the Egyptian Fertility Goddess. If true that could explain the issues of pregnancy on the island.

The face of the statue was viewed from in a profile and appeared to have a human head with the mouth of an alligator. This is the Egyptian god Sobek.("The Incident, Parts 1 & 2")

A way to be able to kill him, since he seemingly couldn't kill Jacob himself. Also, apparently only the leader of the others can see Jacob. But since Locke was really dead then Ben was still the leader, thus he could see and kill Jacob. So he was convinced to kill him.

He can't kill Jacob himself. So he has to get someone to do it, I think. But it can't be blackmail or anything like that, if following Biblical rules?

Matthew Fox is on Jimmy Kimmel, and he confirmed the rumor that he knows what happens at the end of the series. Also said that it won't be "Sopranos" like (which hopefully means it won't just be his eye opening up again) and that everybody will be very satisfied.

So where does this finale rank with the others for you guys?
I'll go ahead and say it's the best.

    For me it's 5 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 1

I love the mytholgy of the show and I love that Jacob was the centric character for this episode, and I loved how in season 2's finale we got to see the history of Desmond and the Hatch and learn why the plane crashed and the purple sky / Jack becoming others' prisoner.
Season 3 was awesome because of the twist at the end but didn't have the mytholgy reveals of the other two, but the action was awesome. Sayid foot neck-snap ftw!
Season 4 was awesome too but loses points because it pretty much showed us the details of things we already knew were going to happen and Season 1 is last because kidnapping Walt and blowing up the hatch door is tame compared to what we know now.
