Bush does that a lot.

Got anything to add there chief? Or are you just going to quote me out of context and be a complete waste of my screen space? I know full well about all the negative things that happen at Guantanamo that the media has reported on. I am unaware of what Obama cited as his reasons for wanting this.
Jack bauer doesn't approve.
So Rush predicted this is all bs and it isn't going to happen.
ABC News: Secret List of U.S. Military Bases to Replace Gitmo
Maybe this story is newer. Sounds like he's going to close gitmo and stick them somewhere else. Sounds more like PR policy than foreign policy.
Dunno about that list, but we definitely are building permanent bases in Iraq.
The Bases Are Loaded: US Permanent Military Presence in Iraq
I think the Iraq SOFA was hinged on the fact that we wouldn't stay there. The above documentary is old but with the kind of investment we've put (ongoing) into those bases I'm not so sure what's going to happen. Aren't we trying to get Canada to maintain a military presence in Iraq after we leave? Will the U.S. ever leave Iraq? Official policy promises an eventual departure, while warning of the dire consequences of a "premature" withdrawal. But while Washington equivocates, facts on the ground tell another story. Independent journalist Dahr Jamail, and author Chalmers Johnson, are discovering that military bases in Iraq are being consolidated from over a hundred to a handful of "megabases" with lavish amenities. Much of what is taking place is obscured by denials and quibbles over the definition of "permanent." The Bases Are Loaded covers a wide range of topics. Gary Hart, James Goldsborough, Nadia Keilani, Raed Jarrar, Bruce Finley Kam Zarrabi and Mark Rudd all add their observations about the extent and purpose of the bases in Iraq.
Summary of the SOFA by a Counterpunch article (grain of salt):
Unofficial Translation of U.S.-Iraq Troop Agreement from the Arabic TextOn November 27 the Iraqi parliament voted by a large majority in favor of a security agreement with the US under which the 150,000 American troops in Iraq will withdraw from cities, towns and villages by June 30, 2009 and from all of Iraq by December 31, 2011. The Iraqi government will take over military responsibility for the Green Zone in Baghdad, the heart of American power in Iraq, in a few weeks time. Private security companies will lose their legal immunity. US military operations and the arrest of Iraqis will only be carried out with Iraqi consent. There will be no US military bases left behind when the last US troops leave in three years time and the US military is banned in the interim from carrying out attacks on other countries from Iraq.
