I managed to get a ride & a place to stay for the night next week for the inauguration, and I'm damned psyched up for the trip. But being unfortunately late to the game, I don't have a ticket to get real close to the action. So my little handheld just isn't going to do the job on getting some good pictures of the ceremony and parade.

Thankfully I have some spare cash set aside and I can afford to get a really nice digital camera with a decent zoom. I'm not talking about professional-grade DSLR with the interchangeable lenses, but I can afford something better than the compact ones. Anyone have a recommendation or two?

This is the camera I own ~ Its not AMAZING zoom but its very good camera and zoom for what you pay for. I absolutely love this camera -- It has a long battery life and takes amazing pictures even if you get shakey hands for any reason.

This i my mothers camera and while its suppose to be a better camera it's pictures turn out like crap constantly -- Also will not hold a charge for more than 6-7hours -.-; We could just have a 'lemon'

Those are 2 camera's with different price tags Not sure what your 'extra cash' flow amount is but I really recommend the Kodak ~ I actually had it stolen from me and I bought the exact same thing again I loved it so much.

Canon SX10Is Simply one of the best cameras out there for under 400. Also, since you mentioned you don't have great seats the optical zoom will help. For cameras I believe it was Optical Zoom > Digital Zoom. But the more you zoom in the greater Image Stabilization you'll need unless you're using a tripod. Also, Canon is one of the best if not the best camera brand out there(Nikon has 1 or 2 that stand out as opposed to Canon's 5-7) but thats just my opinion

Man.. I ended up getting the Canon SX110 instead of the SX10 because it was cheaper, and then I got an email from Newegg right afterwards with a goddamn coupon code for $70 off the SX-10. I might just return it and swap. ARGH!
