According to people like Sean Cody and Corbin Fisher, lots of soldiers are already curious . . .
OT, Obama seems to be waffling with this. First he said he'd move to repeal DADT immediately. Then after the election he said he'd launch a study to investigate the specific effects of DADT on the military before he'd make a move one way or another. And now he's back to where he was first? If he really is, then great. Whether or not this will sit well with soldiers is irrelevant. The law is unconstitutional at best, and better for the military if the government revokes it instead of being sued by discharged soldiers. The US is one of the only NATO countries where gays and lesbians can't serve openly (iirc Turkey is the only other), so it's about time we joined the 21st century.
I DID serve in my countrys air force, as well as almost being done with my uni education now. And I remember boot camp pretty vividly.
I also served with several men and women of several ages.
It was never really an issue, no one cared, we did what we were sent out to do, Everyone were treated as equals, I never saw any issues related to gender or sexual preferences.
I can, of course not state this as an absolute value, personal experience tends to be a shitty guide to generalizations.
Granted, I can't deny that the girls I served with good prettier and pretties as boot camp went on.
But I like to think that people generally respected each others as human beings.
And it's pretty sad that this is still such a big issue for a lot of people.
Kudos to Obama for telling the haters to go fuck themselves in a more polite way.
That said, people to tend to suck, and it IS probably going to be pretty rough for a while.
Edit: this whole stfu about it policy, while not quite as retarded as abstinence policies, it's still pretty fucking retarded thinking it's going to solve anything.
What happens in the field stays in the field.
Being in the army, I dont mind this at all, however it will cause some problems as most of our recruitment comes from poor guys from the south. Guess this just means more than just the women will be spending time on their knees for that promotion from now on.
Never heard of the Jesuits, have we?
You just want this to happen because you're trying to be PC, but anyway, you're all going to regret it because now soldiers can't trust eachother because now they have to worry about the other one being gay and totaly srs about it.Kuya trolls a lot nowadays.
Metric > American system
But that's not my argument, anyway. That was just pointing out the trend. The point is that DADT is discriminatory and serves no purpose beyond that. The government has to have a legitimate interest in order to maintain such a law (as per Lawrence v. Texas), and they don't. Ergo, it has to go.
If you are willing to volunteer to put your ass on the line for the country I live in, I don't care if who you want to fuck. (yes, I'm avoiding the obvious joke...)
It won't make everything perfect in the military, but at least our government is refusing to keep their heads in the sand on this issue. So kudos for that.
Well, to be perfectly honest:
One of the reasons we dont do women in combat (officially, I know some women are in combat situations alot due to their jobs - convoy drivers, etc), is because of the distraction 2 sexes make in that environment, not because they are incompetant. Ive been in coed units and all male units, and the all male units are 5 times more soldierly, more professional, and 10 times less drama filled. Every time you introduce 2 sexes you get personal fueds on who is fucking whom, which 2 NCOs/Officers were sticking their dick into the private they shouldnt have, and which new soldier is pregnant. This has the possibility to happen to a lesser extent with gays, as you wont have the other 80% of the unit trying to fuck them, but there is still the added distraction and damage to unit moral from relationships and other problems.
I agree with obama on this, but at my heart I just dont want to see yet another reason for my soldiers to be distracted (and thus killed) in an area that Im already trying to fight for their focus.
Because all of my soldiers are harvard grads with perfect educational backgrounds and monk like opinions on sex.
I deal with kids and killers, but they are still my soldiers. My first concern is getting them back safely, and distractions lessen that chance.
