For rdm/sch and rdm/whm, in my situation which is non-/nin melees, I will take rdm/sch if we have a supreme brd and my melees aren't so hot with 3E. If it is not a supreme brd I find myself required to take rdm/whm to erase elegy.
I don't think it is always true that a rdm who runs out of mp with non-/nin melees is mismanaging his mp pool. If you consider a 30 second kill time, you should be standing and casting dia on every one of those mobs, unless you're killing too fast, which then dia is the first thing to get the axe. I rarely find time to /heal unless I want to neglect dia, which sometimes has to happen.
I DESPISE cor/dnc if I am rdm. Few things, I don't think threnody(17?) has the same range as elegy(21.9?) does it? Also, brd pulling with elegy can save quite a lot of mp. We have a brd in ls who will not pull with elegy because he doesn't like having it mimic'd onto him, and I never ever take that brd to merits, it turns the party into an mp sink(SE+3E gets used up on fast melee hits and then is down for pecking flurry).
Brd does need to have /ra for when it is out of range or you need a fast pull to keep chain.
Sometimes, and I find that different killing speeds affects this, you can just tank the mob with elegy on it and not have to lullaby, I hate casting lullaby with non-/nin melees.
You can also pull with elegy>lullaby and lose a single shadow per pull(unless it lullabies you on wake), so as long as you aren't linking, brd really should never get hit with elegy. Hell, you can pull while elegy'd most of the time if you have 2x march and haste gear for shadows, assuming you are capable of pulling with -1 shadow per pull.
Threnody and Elegy both have the same range with horn, 20.9. The difference is that the Threnody animation freezes you in place for a second or so after cast, which is extremely irritating. I don't see what that has to do with COR or DNC though.
I really don't care for MNK on birds. Even with full merits, Dia3's MP/killspeed improvement ratio is pretty poor, and you can usually find something better to do with the MP. Furthermore, even though convert timers are rarely an issue, if BRD can cut out Ballad I, that's more time for pulling... and we usually kill fast enough that pullspeed is more of a limiting factor than MP. When you take into account Mjollnir's DPS, it's clear that there will never be enough bread in the laundry.

i don't mind coming rdm/whm for merits but i actually find that whm/sch does a better job at bird camp than rdm/sch. rdm/whm and whm/sch are about equal at bird camp assuming that you have a competent party and are not helping your bard hold/pull mobs... and it seems like you're always fighting off some encroaching party on asura so whm/sch is for 4 am merits in a deserted nyzul![]()
I completely prefer a competant WHM/SCH + BRD/NIN combo on Birds and in most places tbh. I play both and since the introduction of /SCH for WHM it's been considerably more fun in meripos. WHM has access to so much freaking haste gear that casting cycles and reduced timers have always allowed us to get done with the haste cycle faster anyway but sublimation, the JAs, the regens, curagas and the light arts bonuses make up for a lack of convert IMHO.
I don't really care though as long as the players are competant and the MP is rolling in.
Throwing weapon is a much better idea than using a threnody, hate being stuck in casting lag.
Surely it's been said:
RDM/WHM is better for those parties that are so good they clear both Colibri and Wivre. Talking fulltime hasso melee that kill in under 10 seconds; a DRG in the mix, etc. Wivre's attack down is fucking brutal and may kill chain, one /WHM is not enough. RDM erases the best melee while BRD erases the second-best and then RDM erases #3 when timer's up.
RDM/SCH is better for a casual let's-not-stress-but-still-infinitely-chain-birds which I prefer when I'm tired (pay less attention). You could fulltime hasso more safely as a melee (more fun) because the healer has more MP due to lower spell cost and smartly-timed Aspirs. The /WHM buffer can take care of the occasional elegy just fine.
Edit: WHM/SCH is also very, very awesome. Your melee have to seigan a little more often if your WHM isn't on their toes but the SCH charge that makes the next spell free, paired with Cure V... rawr.
Honestly when it comes to bird camps, I find Curagas to be my most MP-efficient spells. I can use them to cure multiple people in a far shorter amount of time, and can make sure to stand in range of my target between Converts to help supplement my own HP without needing to take the time between Converts to heal myself to full. And I can combine it with a Divine Seal (especially after a Convert) if the party is starting to get kinda low (its not like a bird will live long enough to kill me if I pull hate). That pretty much sells me for /WHM.
I'll also plant Protectra on my party to prevent overzealous melees from taking out a more beneficial buff, such as Berserk or Haste, when trying to cancel their shadows. Erase and Reraise are just little bonuses.
/SCH may be king of MP efficiency, but if I don't ever run out of MP anyway, what's the point?
/SCH is best imo for meripos, access to Regen 2 helps offset not having access to Curagas. You don't have erase but I think generally you won't need it unless one of the BRDs or DDs gets Elegied for whatever reason. When we don't go ftw in Dynamis-Valkurm, I like to /SCH for the sheep pulls as it eliminates the need for poison pots.
