Xbox live not working

Got xbox 360 about 3 weeks ago, plugged the ethernet cord from my xbox 360 into my laptop and I have been using that as my internet connection. I have been using it like this since I got it and it has been working nicely until yesterday when I tried to go onto xbox live and there is no connection.... I ran the test and it says failed to find IP address and it suggests I do this power cycle method, I tried it and powered down my modem and all that and it still does not work.. any ideas?

I tried calling the customer support and the first guy went through the power cycle process thing and my phone got disconnected as I finished it. I called them back and got a new person who tells me I have to call my ISP and get this PPOE or something like that and input the address manually, I really forgot what she said but didn't make sense because I didn't need any of that to get on in the first place.

Try connecting your xbox directly to your modem/router to determine if the issue is the xbox or your connection to your computer.

If your laptop is directly connected to your modem and you are connecting fine, then the internet connection is fine.
If your xbox is not connecting to the laptop, but connects fine to the internet while connected directly to the modem/router, there is a config setting on the laptop wrong.

I personally use the wireless adapter for the xbox and I find it to be great.

Well my modem is all the way in the basement and there is no T.V. down there or a way to bring the modem upstairs. It was working perfectly fine until yesterday it's really strange, maybe there is a firewall or something like that causing the problem? I checked my laptop and there is nothing that I can tell blocking it.

The modem should be able to connect to any live outlet in the house, so you can temporarily move it to the xbox location and try it there. If not, you'd have to move a TV to the modem because you'll really want to test these connections.

Also on the laptop, something as simple as a windows update can cause these issues so you might want to double check all previous settings. If you have a wireless, I still highly recommend the wireless adapter.

What're you're firewall settings?

My 360 connects to the Internet through my desktop using an Ethernet Cable and I have to disable my Firewall on the Ethernet connection for my 360 to get online.
