lol, my gf and I were walking around in berkeley when a crazy black man, who was stopped in traffic, honked his horn, looked at us, and yelled "A PLANE CRASHED INTO THE HUDSON RIVER!"

We laughed and said "oh crazy people..."

Watching the news on it atm, they are saying the pilot has over 40 yrs of experience and happens to own some kind of a flying safety school which teaches how to handle hi stress situations while flying. Talk about a good sales pitch to get people to go to his school or w/e

The pilot also is a licensed glider pilot. Seeing all passengers safe and accounted for is a blessing indeed.

Onto bird strikes, they're serious. Millions of dollars are spent each year trying to keep birds away from active airfields to prevent bird strikes. It's amazing how a 15-20 pound bird can tear up the turbines of a jet engine, but I've seen the damage that can be done first hand myself when I used to be in the military. A double bird strike is unheard of, but apparently that is what happened.

I'm just glad that everyone found safety and how quick the first responders got to the scene to ensure this.

Bird strikes or suspected bird strikes happen all the time. I don't know how many times I've been asked by a pilot to look at a suspected bird strike.

Speaking of pilots keeping a cool head and preventing a crisis. About a month ago, we had a fan blade sieze up in one of our 777 engines at around 36,000 feet going from China to Atlanta. The engine failed and they were able to get down to 31,000 feet and stabilize and were able to safely land in Atlanta. I got a look at some of the internal fan blades and they were completely destroyed. Basically they looked like they were made of paper and a dog got hold of them and just started tearing them apart.

If you could choose a pilot to crash-land your plane, Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger III would be a good choice.

Capt Sullenberger, 57, who ditched US Airlines Flight 1549 safely into the Hudson River in New York, has over 40 years of flying experience and heads his own safety consulting business.

The former US Air Force fighter pilot from California has served as an instructor and as an Airline Pilots Association (Alpa) safety chairman and accident investigator.

He has taken part in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations.

According to the New York Times newspaper, Capt Sullenberger is also a certified glider pilot.

This man is more awesome than anything you could ever hope to achieve in your life. Even his name is better than your pitiful existance.

    All hail supreme overlord Sullenburger.

The plane didn't fall from a high altitude, it was in the air for 3 minutes before coming down.
