The guy is 19, hes not a child anymore. If he won't listen kick his ass to the street, not obligated to care for him after 18.

White parents in the South discipline their kids, I know from firsthand experience, still got nail gouge marks in my from when I was a kid :D

My mom broke a wooden broom in half over my head when I back talked her when I was eight. Needless to say I didn't do it again.

Yeah, I'd say that's not proper discipline.

I'm all right with spankings and what not -- I disagree completely that never touching a kid is better for their health -- but when you bring other objects into the equation and/or get more violent than that, it's too much. Some people say a paddle's fine, but I don't think that's necessary, unless you're too much of a pussy to produce a good spank with your hand. And would you really need more force than whatever you can produce with that?

Are there kids that are well-behaved enough to not need spankings, just stern words? Do some kids have legitimate mental disorders which mean they need more understanding? Of course, and a good parent will figure that out. But some of the tykes are little bastards, and they need a red bottom once in a while.

Why is physical violence always the first thing out of someone's mouth when there's a kid with behavior problems? How many millions of studies have to be done showing that physical punishment breeds resentment and thus more behavior problems before people get it?

It's a lot easier to beat the kid and for the parent to move on then it is to discuss the behavior with the kid/have other punishments

I've read all of the studies too, and I agree that there are many cases where people spank or hit and it isn't necessary. No matter what any of those studies say, however, there are exceptions to the rule -- terribly misbehaving children -- who don't have disorders, haven't been brought up in broken homes, and still refuse to listen to their parents.

People who abuse their children are just that, abusers, but I'd trust a level-headed parent -- someone who actually deserves to have children, unlike most parents in this world -- to know when and when not to spank. Plenty of children raised in a loving environment, whether they're from the costliest mansion in Beverly Hills or the most run-down farm in Alabama, have been spanked at one point or another and turned out to be healthy adults.

I've probably done more things personally to fight against child abuse than many of the people on this forum, and I still advocate a spanking for the worst kids. They really need to earn it, though. No spankings for stupid, trivial shit, like stealing a cookie from the cookie jar or getting a B in school. That's just a fucked up parent.

Anger is the easiest thing to have, because you don't have to learn or know anything.

I don't think physical violence should be used in all cases, just the extreme ones. For example, my mom has slapped me once in my life, when I was 9 and told her to fuck off after having learned what it was from something or another. That was appropriate, to say the least, and I got off lightly.

My dad used to smack me upside the head all the time from ages 11-16, for legit shit like my grades dropping from straight A's in public elementary school to B's and my first C in private middle school, to stupid stuff like my not performing well in tennis practice. I definitely resented him for it and thought he was a total prick.

You don't believe that all cases of a parent spanking a child means they're angry, do you? I'd certainly hope a parent would never actually feel and take out anger on their children. I'm not sure who you're responding to here, or if you're talking about spankings in general.

Hey when you are 3 and 3 on Hardcore Search and Destroy and you have an airstrike at your disposal, the last thing you need is some bitch of a mother turning your damn XB off. I'd throw her down the stairs!

Ok not really. But seriously... 19? GTFO of the house

I got my ass beat as a kid. I turned out ok. What were they supposed to do? Use harsh language and ground me? I remember distinctly being a trouble maker when I was a kid and laughing at futile punishments like verbal threats, or "Taking away things I could get back just as easily" No.. usually a swift kick in the pants by my dad straightened me out immediately. I also didn't repeat the stupid shit for it. They also made sure to tell me why what I did was wrong.

I didn't resent my parents for it either. Thats what I would do to me. I didn't use logic and understanding when I was 10. All I knew is right and wrong from immediate results.

Would this work for everyone? No, probably not. But I'd have to say IQ of both parties would play a factor in its effectiveness. The follow through would be just as important as the shots taken as well.

I'm generally referring to the reactions in the thread, but then against most people here are young adults so it could always be an issue of immaturity, that, or they're just going to be terrible parents.

There definitely are a lot of terrible parents out there. People who do frequently turn to spankings, verbal abuse, or worse; people who are completely indifferent to what their children do; people who didn't even want to become parents and never learned to do it responsibly and properly.

I definitely hold responsible those facets of society who frequently say having children is practically a necessity. Not every person in this world is fit to be a parent. Not by a long shot.

I'm sorry, you made a coherent, relative, and clearly effective post. It's going to be ignored by the people arguing in this thread. If they do acknowledge your post it'll be thrown aside as it can't be used as a blanket statement for all children, while they'll then say something, then add a conditional clause to it how every child needs something different; ignoring the fact that you very well had said something to the same effect "IQ of both parties would play a factor in its effectiveness."

Edit: Also, whether intentional or not IQ is actually used properly for once.

Yeah, what REALLY got him mad was that he looked through my notebooks and saw i was doodling all over the place. Also, my lowest grade was in music, because in my new school i was expected to read sheet music notes, and in my old school all we did was sing songs =/. Sooooo basically she hands me test, it was a bunch of notes with spaces under them for the corresponding letter, and I put G for everything. I got a 23 surprisingly.
