I'm a big fan of Teavana.
They are a bit pricey, but they have a great selection.
I use this:
Teavana® Perfect Tea Maker (16oz.) - Teavana


for my loose-leaf tea. You put in the tea, pour in your water and let it steep for as long you want, then place it over your cup. The water falls in, and the tea stays in the steeper due to a mesh strainer at the bottom. Like magic!

Their Sweet Lily White tea is one of my favorites. It's actually like drinking flowers.

Secondly, the way I go about making my loose tea is making a whole pot. Boil water, put it into a tea pot, and leave it to steep for a while (let it float freely in the water). If it's a sweet tea, I usually add the honey right after I pour in the water and stir. I don't mind pieces of tea in my cup, but you can always use a paper coffee filter over the tip of the tea pot and pour. If you can't drink it all, leave it to cool, strain it into a large holder and put it in the fridge for some yummy cold tea.
If you want just a cup, again the easiest/cheapest way is to use the coffee filter with about a teaspoon of tea and tie it with elastic. That'd be some ghetto tea-making ^_^

urgh this reminds me of French exchange whe i was like 13. Took the french family some English Breakfast tea, they got a little confused, when i got up the next morning they had made this tea and mixed it in the bowl with my cornflakes the whole thing looked more like mouldy porridge

You're absolutely right, my method is really only best for black tea, if you tried making green or another variety like that you'd risk scalding the leaves and fucking up the taste.

How do you get hot water for green teas? Just use a thermometer and watch the pot so it doesn't boil, and take it off the burner when it hits 160ish?

Just boil kettle as normal and then let it cool for a few mins until you pour it into the pot, bit of experiementing for the first few tries usually lets you find the perfect timing for your particular tea.
