So I decided on what camera I'm going to get. Should I stick with just the lens it comes with or get a long range lens as well?

Don't get that lens. It has no IS, and at such a long focal length, you'd want it. Are you getting the XSi? The 18-55 is a decent walk around lens. If you want some reach, the 55-250 has a plenty.

I'd walk around with the kit lens and see if you need another right away. No point in buying a lens with a 250mm+ reach when you may not use it that much.

Getting the t1i. Yeah I guess I'll just go along with the 18-55 lens, just don't know what I'd really need for some nice shots of the city

I have the T1i. The 18-55 is really versatile. I probably use that and the 50mm 1.8 II the most. I have the 55-250 as well, but unless I need the telephoto (which isn't often), I don't use it much.

Did you get a discount on it? I'm sure it was a lot cheaper than when I bought it because the T2i came out. Still pissed, I would have bought the T2i if I had known it was coming.

I haven't gotten it yet, I gotta go through Canon to get a better discount. I'd get the t2i, but it's a little out of my price range. If the lens it comes with is as good as you say it is for now, I could get the t2i and not get another lens.

If you do video, the T2i will shoot full 1080p at 30fps. The T1i will shoot 720p at 30fps, and 1080p at, I think, 20. You can get away with a bit more in low light with the T2i too, it has better ISO performance from what I can gather. Same sensor as a 7D, but, like the T1i, a bit slower fps.

I'd keep the 18-55 and get a T2i. It's easier to get 200 bucks later and buy a new lens than to sell your T1i body and upgrade. The 18-55 will be fine for city-walking unless you want to shoot a portrait of someone standing on top of a building.

Yeah, with my discount it's about a $40 difference to upgrade to the t2i, and since I wouldn't be getting the LR lens and the netbook I had previously planned on, I could just do that.

Need some suggestions on a new camera. Best buy is offering 36 months free financing on DSLR's. Would be silly for me not to jump at this.


I have experience with the Nikon D60. Very nice camera that I never had any problems with.

Well it really depends on your budget. I would sink as much money as you can afford into good lenses and other accessories like a flash (things that will devalue slowly and last a long time) and then get the least expensive body at the end that you are comfortable with.

I opted for the D3000 and now I am investing in better lenses rather than going for a more expensive body and not being able to afford more lenses.

That being said the D90 is an amazing camera with great iso performance and speed. I personally liked it a lot better than the D5000 when I played with them in the store.

(Even then I went for the super cheap D3000 body for now and I will upgrade my body later.)

Any recommendations on a film scanner that will be primarily for my 120mm negs? I recently grabbed a TLR camera and am going to be doing some 6x6 and 6x4.5 stuff from time to time. Not ALL the time, but semi-regular I would imagine.

Anyone have any preferred models/brands? So far I have been looking at the Canoscan 8800, which seems to be around 160-180ish. A bit more than I would like to pay if i can find an older model with the film inserts included.

Also looking at the Epson Perfection line as well. Just started my search and thought I would check to see if anyone here uses one they are happy with.

Are you developing your own film? If you aren't why not have the lab that does your processing, scan for you? They have much more expensive high quality scanners and at least the local shop where I live isn't to expensive to have them scan your negatives in for you when you get them developed.

The 8800F and the higher end Epsons are good.

You may have to run a virtual machine though, as I can't think of a scanner with Win 7 drivers, though some may work without a VM running XP.
