It has been tooked. So far the only thing that sucks is that the Manual is in Spanish. But... no one reads the fucking manual right? =P I have it in PDF on my laptop and Kindle already anyway >.>

    That sounds grey market.

Serial on the box matches the serial on the camera. The rest of the paperwork inside is all English pretty much. The Software Guide, the Limited Warranty Card, the accessories pamphlet, the registration card, the "Sign Up for Online Learning Canon Workshops!" pamphlet are all in English. The Software Instruction Manual CD looks... Japanese, but the EOS Digital Solution Disk (with ZoomBrowser, DPP, Drivers, etc. are English. My understanding is that Canon will not fix grey market cameras correct? She had the paperwork saying that the Mirror fix was done when she sent it in for shutter errors (paperwork shows 'Shutter Block', Mirror Box' and 'Dial Assembly' were all replaced in August. Another service order for February of 2010 shows that the 'Shutter Mechanism', 'Main PCB/FPC' and 'Rear Cover' were replaced.

When I asked if she has ever seen any issues with a greenish tint on the LCD display (as the earlier models with serials starting in 1 and 0 sometimes had) she explained that the entire back cover was replaced, so it is a newer LCD as well.

All seems in working order to me. I looked for hot pixels, tested different WB modes, different shutter speeds, transferred files to my laptop, etc... so now only time will tell. Is there any other way outside of maybe calling Canon to see if it is Grey Market?

EDIT: I mean hell, the thing is out of warranty anyway... so other than that is there any other reason people avoid grey market? They are the same cameras, just that they have avoided import tax and are usually sold for less right?

I guess there's really no real issue with grey market for you since you're knowingly buying it used and the previous owner is truthful about its past and repairs. The usual thing to avoid with grey market is shit being used/refurbished/defected and sold as brand-new.

Actually, how long ago did it get the overhaul from Canon? I think they will usually issue a new a warranty if they do such significant work.

1st was in February 2010, Mirror Box and Shutter Block were done in August 2010. Looking at it now, it looks like the repairs may not have been done through Canon? The repair center was through Cameraworld (which is essentially part of the Ritz/Kitz/Wolf Camera etc. chain). That is also where she works, which could have something or nothing to do with that.

EDIT: XD registered my 5D on Canon's site, got 15% off accessories! =P

Need halp T_T. Tried using my cf card to save pictures to my computer, but my computer couldn't read the card. Tried putting card back in camera and connecting camera to computer, but that didn't work either. After doing both things, now my camera won't turn on correctly, and my cf card is borked. I went and bought a new card, which my computer recognizes, but my camera still won't turn on correctly.

By turn on correctly, I mean I turn the switch on, and nothing comes on. I try to snap a photo and with out the cf card in, my tiny screen above the lcd screen says "No CF Card". Cool, so I turn the switch off, but it keeps flashing no cf card. I open the slot to the cf card and it stops flashing, insert the card, turn baby on...and nothing. Nothing at all.

I'm pretty sure this all happened cause I connected the camera. I'm attempting to update the firmware, but I don't know how to do that if my main lcd screen never turns on >_< any help?

Edit: if it helps, i can turn camera on and press the button that changes between timed, single shot, or multishot (whatever its called when you hold the button down and it keeps snapping photos) and see my small screen change modes. Nothing else seems to happen though, and pressing the shutter button does nothing.

did you format the new card? Here's what I'd do.

Remove your battery, and give it a couple of minutes, then put it back in. Your camera should be ok after that. I've had that happen to me once on my 40D where I accidentally put in a nikon formatted card into my camera body, and it refused to work. I know Nikon and Canon are competitors.. but jeez!

Format your new card, once you put it in, and buy a decent card reader to read the previous card.

I'll try that, but I don't know if thats the problem. I can put the battery in, but I can't do anything else with it other then have the lcd panel tell me either no cf card, or nothing at all. I also can't bring the lcd monitor up to check my settings, which worries me >_<.

edit: formatted card, put in a fresh battery, nothing new. It doesn't seem to recognize my lense or something, cause shutter and aperature values don't come up, but it should still do something, which it isn't. How pricey is getting one of these things repaired? Cause god damn I can't think of anything else to do. I don't think it's a blown fuse because the lcd panel still works, but shutter and lcd screen do not >_<

This really a longshot, and doesn't exactly fit in with all of the issues you are having... but the fact that you have been removing/replacing the CF card a bit more than normal (prolly?) has me thinking of it. On most Canon models, there is an pretty unanimously hated design flaw in regards to the CF door. If you open it when your camera is on, your camera powers down. I know this is a shot in the dark, but when you say "your camera doesn't start up right" it just made me think of it. Maybe just check that the CF door is snapping shut all the way? Firmly closed? Another issue is with the CF dock itself, if people put the CF card in improperly older models could very easily have bent pins in the socket.

I wouldn't THINK that either of these would cause the other issues you are having though, but worth mentioning anyway, just to maybe rule them out?

Just tried holding down the door tightly and nothing new happened. I'm also confident it's not a bent pin because the lcd panel says "No Cf card" when there is none, but the message does not pop up when I do put it back in. If I had to guess, I'd say the camera just doesn't want to boot up past the "Check if cf card is inserted" check, cause once it does it, it basically says "Peace bro".

Wow... sorry. Shit, been looking around quite a bit trying to see if I can track down what might have happened, but I am not seeing anything really similar. Really fucking sucks to see you so stoked on this camera then have this shit happen. Is there anywhere you could take it locally? Pro Photo supply store of some kind, see if they would even just take a look at it, or maybe call them see if they have any clue what it could be?

I am at a loss, read quite a few 350D dedicated threads around and none seem to have any sort of similar issues. Sorry Salodin, I will keep looking...

Thank...I've been looking for the better part of 12 hours to no avail. There's a Ritz around, that's the only photography store I know of in the area. Do they do repairs there?

Eh, some of them might ship repairs out to a repair service. I wouldn't expect it to be very cheap though. If you have no other options though and have to take it there, you could ask about a loaner in the meantime. Some places used to do that depending on the turnaround time, but who knows anymore. I really am not that sure where to tell you to look for repairs, maybe someone else in the thread might have more ideas?

Just fucking around last night... this is with my lady's 50mm 1.8 wide open.

That leads me to ask a question. I have pretty much narrowed my lens choices down to the Canon 50m 1.4 or the Sigma 50mm 1.4. I have heard some amazing things about the Sigma. Does anyone here have experience with it? It is a bit more money than the Canon, but the bokeh on it looks very nice. I still haven't ruled out the 85mm 1.8 either, but it is a bit long and for the time being I want to stick with one lens on my new old 5D for a bit. 50mm suits me and mine perfectly for a while.... back in the yestertimes, the days of film, it was all I shot on for years before grabbing a 28mm and a 135mm (which still didn't get a lot of use).

I just got the Sigma 1.4 yesterday, funny you should ask lol. I like it a lot, and it's built well - but on my 1D, it won't work on One Shot AF mode, where as on my 40D, it does. So I'm thinking something is borked with my 1D. I'm just going to take it into the local repair shop and see what they say.

Edit: It IS my 1D. Apparently, something is wrong with the focus mechanism on the camera body, and it needs to get sent into Canon for repair. I guess I'm relegated to using my 40D for a while now.

Well that sucks. Though your having a backup at all is much better than not =) I really am leaning towards the Sigma for a few reasons, admittedly aesthetics of the actual lens itself being one of them (the foolish one). I really like the way the lens looks... now I just need to find a GD store locally that has one in stock to take a look at. The lesser stores carry them but are out and the Pro Shop only carries Tokina and Tamron it seems. Effers.

As you shoot more with it, IF you shoot more with it, in the next week or so let me know? I plan on picking up a lens next weekend most likely.

I'll be shooting with my 40D, but will probably go out and buy another 40D for a 3rd backup. I have a couple of weddings to shoot, and I honestly feel nervous without a backup body. Last thing I want is to tell the bride that I can't shoot anymore due to my camera failing..

She'd have my ass and tack it to the wall and toss billions of darts at it in wanton rage!

Such is the life of a professional photographer.

I'll shoot a few things with it today and do a few tests - namely focus testing to make sure it works as intended and isn't back/front focusing.

Ha! I was JUST downloaded a focusing chart in anticipation of testing that myself once I have a lens... to test. I have read that initially this Sigma had some issues with improper focus but read of fewer and fewer cases of it lately. Either way, really wanting to buy locally for that reason.

Then there is this Tilt-Shift Lens that I always end up looking at. It is so impractical for me that it would really be little more than an impulse buy that would NEVER end up paying for itself... and could be duplicated with enough time in Photoshop. Still though, I always come back to that sucker and look at it.

Shoot enough cheesy wedding shit and you might be able to justify the purchase of a tilt-shift.

Well it is a good thing this one is only 469 as I will never shoot a wedding unless it is my own.

Nothing against wedding photographers but I can't do it.
