With the f stop so low, shutter speed so slow and ISO at 1000, I'm surprised it isn't way overexposed

I'm assuming it was lit with a Christmas tree or something equally incredibly dim.

I know this thread is probably more for more advanced cameras, but I have to say I'm impressed with the Canon Powershot SX230 we bought as an early Christmas gift. This thing blew away my old point and shoot, especially in night shots. Battery ran dead on us but here's a few night shots from our disney trip. With the Hollywood Tower Hotel shot, we were standing between the two disney parks and zoomed in and it came out really clear.

It was night and the only light on was above our table iirc. Coupled with my wife hating bright lighting leads to near constant dim environments. I'm honestly surprised the ISO wasn't 3200, since most of the candids I take around the house are usually that high.

Are speed lites worth it if the flash I'm using (dad bought it at the hospital gift shop the day I was born) still works fine?

I'm guessing it's not E-TTL, so I'd say buy a speedlight unless you're incredibly gifted at evaluating flash power.

I <3 Canon speedlites... preferably TTL-capable and just point it off-camera at a wall/ceiling. Bam.

I think I'll get a lens hood, nifty fifty, speed lite as my next investments for my camera. In that order.

The gf really wants me to get into photography. With just the kit lens I was so eh about it.

Your equipment doesn't "get you into photography" nor does your girlfriend. You are going to get into photography gear and end up spending a ton of money. You have to have a passion for photography yourself and go out and take pictures. If you are eh about photography with the kit lens then you will probably be eh about it even with a lot of gear. You should only get new gear to fill in gaps in your gear where you feel like you are lacking something specific to take a specific type of photograph.

Sorry to sound harsh but I am trying to save you some money here.

Sunset over the lake by my house yesterday. I am really pissed I was taking pictures at my wife's baby shower just a couple days ago and forgot I left my camera on auto iso maxing out at 1600. (Great for taking pictures without a flash inside of people) I didn't realize that I was taking 1600 iso pictures of the sunset until it was too dark to lower the iso so the few photos I got came out more grainy than I like.

    Second sunset pic.

Gorgeous Zoob. At least you can probably get rid of a decent amount of grain post process I suppose yeah?

Thank you Graelinn. Yeah I think I will be able to reduce noise post process since the D7000 has such small fine grain. It also doesn't really produce hot pixels at all in the noise which is great. What is the best way to reduce noise post process? I was using Adobe CS5, I don't have Lightroom or Aperture nor do I have noise ninja.

Zoob, Lightroom has really awesome grain reduction. You can dl a trial of Lightroom that's fully functional (just timebombed) if you haven't tried it yet.

Cool thanks for the suggestion. Instead of the trial I think I will grab the beta for the next version of LR which I think will keep functioning until it goes into release.
