    Techno/Electronica

Whatever you want to refer to it as I'm just wondering how people who are into it find new stuff to listen to. I've been big into trance/house for a while but finding new stuff isn't always as easy as I'd hoped, just curious as to what outlets people use for finding newer stuff?

I listen to di.fm a lot, mostly Corsten's Countdown/State of Trance etc... but even so it seems somewhat limited as to the amount of new things you really get to hear and then be able to find later (mp3 format really, I don't have a 12" player).

Also, not limited to trance/house stuff, just anything for music in general really, as much as the radio outlets do for music they also limit it in a sense, I've got a lot of friends into some odd types of music that are able to find stuff but they never remember how. So any ideas would be awesome, I'm sure there's all kinds of things on the interwebs I'm not aware of.

I started off listening to trance/house stuff. DJ Micro mostly (Tech-Mix Live @ Avalon = gewd CD). From there I drifted into Drum & Bass and haven't really felt like leaving. I do listen to a lot of atmospheric ambient stuff too though. Drum & Bass is <3. LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad, Goldie, Makoto, Tidal, Galaxi, Indigo Sync, DRS & Blame, etc etc.

Finding new music? Uh, mostly Soulseek I guess. Local music forums (seattlednb, etc etc). Some people I know send me random stuff from time to time. Wolfsheim, A.M.D.A., BT, blah blah etc etc.

great question! there are a plethora of DJs out there to fit ur niche or subgenre or maybe your open to a wide variety of beats (as am i).

as far as trance goes ill tell you the best way to discover sounds is through podcasts! major trance DJs release mixes on a weekly basis of their favorite tracks of the moment. This is where i discovered many of the DJs i have grown to love (and are highly respectable in their field among ...say.. the euro crowd)..

Names? DEFINITELY check out armin van buuren and tiesto's podcasts. They are often considered the two best DJs in the world as far as trance and progressive goes. Above & Beyond also release good podcasts as well... im sure others into the genre have their own favorites... a simple search in itunes for Tiesto's Clublife and Armin's State of Trance will give you these free podcasts (ranging from 20 minutes to 2 hours if u get into A&B's Trance Aroudn the World Podcasts).

Here they will give you samples of various great DJs and there you can branch off!

If you listen to DI.FM, you're probably familiar with DJ GT's "Generation of Trance" series, which has been running monthly since the late 1990's. On his website, if you register on the forums, you can download every single mix he has ever made and aired on the station. I've been registered for years and have downloaded virtually every mix, and my DJ GT collection is over 18GB on its own.

Here are the mixes you can download from the website: Generation Trance :: Mixes

That on its own will come to about 14GB.

I suggest using a Firefox plug-in like DownThemAll! to make it easier. Make sure you set it to only download one file at a time, as the server won't let you download more than that simultaneously.

EDIT: Gah, looks like you do have to register to snag the file links. Well, it's a basic forum registration, so it'll only take moments.

Their podcasts are also radio shows that appear regularly on di.fm's trance station, or at least i know AVB's does (a state of trance), I also just heard A&B's show for the first time the other week and it was pretty fantastic as well, I think they had Gareth Emery as a guest? Someone I liked can't quite remember who.

Anyway, good suggestions so far, most of it should keep me busy for a while (especially the DJ GT stuff =D)

I'm partial to psy/goa trance myself.. mainly because it's what my friend from high school spins. He's a DJ up in the Boston area. As far as the big names go you can't really go wrong with Tiesto or Oakenfold.

About that -- sorry that I said you didn't need to register for most of it in my original post. I forgot that the links take you to the forum. However, considering that it's a regular ol' forum and that you don't need to jump through any hoops to register, I'm gonna guess you've already done that.

Aside from di.fm, last.fm is where I find a lot of good new artists. I put in trance/house/electronica/etc.. as the tag and it randomly finds music associated with that tag.

Oakenfold is one of the worst DJs in EDM imo these days. He seems to really have lost touch with what trance really is, as his "music" sounds nothing like it anymore.

Darude, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, and Kaskade(not to be confused with kaskada) are some great DJs.

Also, for goa/psy stuff, check out Infected Mushroom.

I listen to Paul van Dyk's VONYC SESSIONS pretty often. It's from Paul Van Dyk and free =D. They even have a calendar showing what DJs will play on certain days.

might be worth trying last.fm, i've only dicked around with it for a few minutes

i find it funny that people are all listing the relatively large name DJs >_> i'd say it'd be hard to be into trance without knowing AVB/Tiesto and possibly Ferry Corsten among others

here's something i really can't answer though, anyone know of any good 8bit hardcore? basically some midis/nintendo sounding stuff (though not old nintendo music, that's easy enough to find)

If you're a fan of A.F.I. or at least his singing, you could try listening to their side project called Blaqk Audio. Pretty good sound and it's electronica, Album is called Cex Cells

Hardcore? Can't make any recommendations there, personally. Chiptunes in general, however, I can help you with.

First of all, you should download any stuff by Chris Hulsbeck. He's an amazing game composer who did tons of work on the Commodore 64, and other systems. Some of his compilations are re-done versions of his songs (not chiptune, but still electronica), although you can find the originals if you look enough. Some examples (keep in mind that Commodore tracks can be long):

    YouTube - A500 Turrican II - Intro

YouTube - Chris Hülsbeck - Giana sisters Theme song

Secondly, you'll want to get things from the fantastic virt: [url=http://www.biglionmusic.com/category/chiptunes]Big Lion Music

Also, I totally love Tree Wave. With extremely rare exceptions, the only instruments they use are a dot matrix printer, a PC FM card, and an Atari synthcart. Sometimes there's singing, as the group consists of a man and a woman. You should support them if you have the cash, they're as indie as it gets.

YouTube - Tree Wave - SLEEP music video

YouTube - Tree Wave - Combat

Here are some other random recommendations.
