120 Hz HDTV

What's the specification on the different High Definition broadcast formats and Blu Ray? How many frames per second are even available to be displayed? I always thought it was either 24 or 30, did that change?

Are 120 Hz TVs displaying extra information that is available in the source broadcast that 60 Hz TVs are simply ignoring and not utilizing? Or, do 120 Hz TVs simply look at two frames, and "guess" (interpolate) what an intermediate frame would look like and create extra frames to display in that way?
