A cry for help was when he was thrown into jail the first few times this is just a swan dive off the edge of a cliff.

He had his chance, he blew it, tough shit.

Prison education system should be there for people who want to turn their life around but from the sound of this dude when he gets out he will be back in jail in less then a year.

Why help someone who doesn't want it.

Basically, I'll put it this way: he doesn't believe he can have a happy life doing shit the right way. That's what needs to change.

Education won't help him until he's had some serious therapy, which he won't get inside. Sucks but you lost a friend.

Essentially what I'm hoping is that we can find someplace well known for actually "making people better," and hopefully get him some kind of decent education started, at least to the point where he could get a job good enough to pay his way through school. (convicted felons can't get student aid of pretty much any sort, obviously)

At that point, somewhere like 8ish years down the road, as long as he hasn't done anything stupid inside, I think he should be able to become a legitimate candidate for work release/parole type programs, or at least the "boot camp" things that are basically a modern equivalent of the "chain gang."


Honestly, even if he has to spend the whole 24 years in there, that's not my biggest concern. What I'm most worried about is him getting out, be it in 8 years, 15 years, or the whole thing... and then going right back in a few months later. That's what I want to prevent.

That's really what I'm concerned with. I honestly can't say I really think he wants to turn it around... That's why I'm so concerned about trying to get him into a place that can actually help change that.

Also, the fact he's in for armed robbery seem to indicate that he's probably not good enough to be the kind of "hackers turned computer security", since anyone who'd be able to actually help people from being protected by hacking or whatever would well...not actually robbing the physical bank with a fucking gun.

In any case, he has 24 years to think of something, maybe you or him would find something ideal within the next decade or so, best of luck.

The extent of his education is an alternative high school, a G.E.D. and teaching himself how to work on computers.

Is he going to lobby for PC access once you come up with a course, or how much time will he have? It's not really possible to learn programming on a PC with nothing but Britannica.

You have time to figure it out. Wait 20 years or so, then start talking with him on what he wants to learn or do before he gets out. That still gives him 4 years, which is plenty of time even for college degrees, let alone vocational ventures. By then, he'll be more serious about it than now. He'll be 47, and 47-year-olds tend to be more responsible and serious about life than 27-year-olds.

Even if he's in for a long time, it still seems like a good idea to give him something to do other than more push ups. Especially if there's a chance he could be out in around 8 years.

That's honestly not a bad idea...

The language course idea was one of the first things I thought of too, it shouldn't be too hard to at least get him a book he can learn from.


Anyway, one last plea, I know we've got some people involved in corrections around here, is there anybody with any advice on a "good" prison that has a reasonable rate of successful reform? Or even where to look?
