Be honest, even those kicking the crap out of those banned/suspended while they are down- how many times have you screamed at the screen for crappy droprates? Be it w. legs from Kirin, dynamis droprates prior to the patch, THF knife before the patch, Argus, hell even VE. At any level of play, this game is about gear and getting it. Take all those experiences, then imagine being able to improve the droprates without any kind of 3rd party software, only using what the programmers gave you. You report it, and those in whom you are supposed to believe (ha) tell you "its working as intended". You not gonna do it?

I'm not saying those who participated were 100% honest in their reports. I'm sure they weren't because I sure as hell wouldn't have been. I'm not saying that those who gained from this shouldn't be punished. And I'm not saying they didn't violate the ToS. I just choose to see them as legitimate card counters in Blackjack- they knew something most didn't, it didn't involve any "cheating" or hacks, and they took down the House. Problem is, even the best card counters eventually get caught and blacklisted from the casinos.

Oh, and one last comment- those of you doing the most aggressive bashing- you do realize half the people you bash are coming back, likely with all their gear intact? Who's gonna be laughing then? And if/when you ever desire to participate in events with them, I hope they remember. Again, I'm not saying they deserve a free pass (I'd go with 2 week ban and all Salvage gear removed, those who profited financially are more difficult I agree), but I do think that the way they went about issuing permabans was odd at best and completely random at worst. I'd love to see their process for perma vs. temp on display- I'm guessing Ouija Board, some incense, acid, and a dart board. But that's me.

Caveats:

1. I have fallen completely out of most endgame scenes in the past year due to my schedule and some solo goals (have very limited playtime the past year), so my opinion is far from valuable.

2. I have not done salvage. I know I'm a schlep, but I went on my "hiatus" about 2 months prior to the fix of Salvage. Feel free to repeat it to bash me :D

3. I was but a fledgling RDM likely without a SJ when they fixed the Barone gear issue, so I wasn't able to experience it directly, only heard about it and have read former posts on it.

To be honest -- and I'm not one of the people specifically attacking the banned, though I'm absolutely loving this ridiculous circus show -- I really have never "screamed at the screen." Been disappointed sometimes, but yeah, I usually don't yell at vidyagaems. It is what it is, I know the drop rate percentages, I hope for a drop, and I accept whatever happens. As aforementioned, sometimes I get bummed if I don't get what I want, but you just have to try again.

Not only do I not have a single completed piece of Usukane, but I've been playing MNK as my only job since NA release just about, and have been through numerous fly-by-night HNMLSes -- the nature of my job prevented me from joining anyone noteworthy -- and I still don't have Byakko's Haidate. It took me over 30 fights, usually fueled by my own seals, to get Destroyers, which most people get often and wind up throwing away. I could go on, really, but I have had my share of disappointments.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned before, but has anyone noticed how the perma banned people on FFXI fanzone site has their character names grayed out? While it looks like the temp banned people are still on active status.

Can anyone confirm this?

oh i dont know man. Perhaps because gil was duped in the dbox thing. perhaps because sellables were duped in Dbox thing. Nothing in this hurt anyone at all. The only thing that i can see someone complaining about would be the price of upgrade materials.

I used to lend credance to the arguement that the price of upgrade materials was artificialy high due to what was occuring in salvage. But that arguement got smashed to pieces as the prices for Imp. Wootz Ingots roze from 800k to 1,050,000 not long after the update that fixed salvage. I know, I was making many of the ingots on Odin. So, the arguement that this was making other players lives miserable, in anyway whats so ever, is complete crap lol.

This Salvage thing really wasnt hurting anything at all.

No Gill was artificialy produced.

The price of upgrade materials was actualy cheeper pre patch.

More Alexandrite was Produced.

More players were getting gear.

In hindsight, there was nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, for all the people thumping on their printouts of the ToS... Things are actualy worse, where salvage is concerned. wow

That was sort of my take on this until last night, when I decided to do a quick calculation on how much Alexandrite was duped, and how much it was worth. I used a few basic assumptions, which maybe people will quibble with the specifics of, but I think the general point will stand. If you figure the average amount of Alex per run is about 50, when you take into account the low % chance of dropping off boss (my group only really does silv anymore, so maybe other zones are different), if you figure an average sale price of 3k in the period between the September 9 update that added pouches and the Nov. 26 emergency maintenance, and you take a group that runs salvage every day.

Then you are looking at a 23M+ gil profit just from the extra alexandrites obtained from duping pouches in those 77 days. So yes, in some ways it is very much like duping a KC or millions of gil. And that's not even considering SW duping. Maybe it varies from group to group, some groups duped a Speed Belt's worth of alexandrites, maybe some others that don't go every day only duped a peacock charm's worth. I don't know if you really even want to make a qualitative distinction between the two.

Part of me even wonders if the (Salvage-related) bannings would have been this severe if there was no alexandrite there. You have to figure that was a big factor in their decision to proceed the way they did.

Not to mention once you introduce those Alexandrites you're creating a larger supply, which means you run the risk of decreasing the price of each (Good to some, bad for others). Either way your point is irrelevant since in all cases players were banned for duplicating, not for duplicating and hurting the economy. The rule is to ban those that duplicate items. The reasoning behind their rule is irrelevant since you agree to them.

The fact that you used the "It didn't hurt others" speech just proves they're only concerned about the severity of the punishment once it goes against their interest. That's all I was trying to get that. Thanks for proving my point.

AFAIK we're back on midnight PST 26 jan, which is in about 2 and a half hours or so.

Actually it goes by PST, just like there updates and maintanance go. Strangly enough ive been temp banned a few times, each time the jailtime didn't start until the next day PST midnight and didn't end until PST midnight the day i was let off.
