Here's the thing. FFXI players aren't children. You, we, are all mature, responsible adults, (at least in theory,) and should expect to be treated like adults, not like children.

I'm betting that, on the whole, the people who only took part in this exploit once are people that have only recieved 72 hour bans. It's not entirely unreasonable to think that someone did something once and accidentally discovered that it was an exploit afterward.

However, people that performed the exploit multiple times must have known what they were doing. Known that item duplication - or use of any exploit, no matter the source of said exploit - is a violation of TOS, and went ahead with it anyways.

You can do anything if you're willing to pay the price, and for those that utilized this exploit repeatedly, the time to pay has come.


For those who think that SE is reacting too harshly, consider that this is an exploit that was known by some players for near to 20 months. The understood relationship between SE and players is that when a player comes across an error, be it an exploit or a simple glitch, they are to report it to SE so that SE can fix it in a timely manner.
In this case, however, the players violated that trust and abused this exploit for months. For months upon months. It is unlikely that a single report of this exploit was submitted to SE before October '08. With such a rampant violation of trust it should be no surprise that staff at SE dealing with this concern - if not most of the staff in general - is incensed with the players that partook of the exploit. They are in the right in acting as they do, and where they have been more lenient in the past there is no incentive for them to do so now.







And for those that think FFXI's player base has been dropping and this will kill it, you're wrong. FFXI has maintained a fairly consistent base of around 500,000 players for the past three years.

I think you are confusing the two points.

People are generally not upset with those that just duped, got caught and then accepted the consequences.

People are getting on their high horses about the people that duped, got pissy about other people causing "their dupe" to get shut down, then crying like angsty teens when they got banned.

For example, I respect Xerlic for what they said. They knew it was wrong, did it anyway, got some reward and may now be banned for it, but accept that situation as a consequence for their actions.

This thread is really showing the difference in the maturity of people. Justifications and excuses and blaming everyone but themselves are just glaring signs of immaturity and a reminder that some of the people that play the game are just anti-social children.

SE isn't banning/suspending to be evil.
They are not banning/suspending because there was a mistake.
This may be complicated to understand, but what they did was completely fair.

SE is basically telling FFXI players, "If you find a glich, report it. If you exploit it, you are not following rules and will be punished."

Those that have accepted their punishment should be brough forward and commended on their integrity. They accept that they cheated and don't whine, complain and bitch about it. These are the kinds of people that will learn from their mistake and probably deserve a second chance (in my opinion).

Those that don't accept it are only lying to themselves and probably don't belong in the game to begin with.

Personally, I think the best method would be to have each player call in.

When they do... SE could give access to their account.

They log in and are told to physically drop every completed set and every piece collected
in Salvage and Nyzul. If they comply they get to keep their account. (Even if the piece
was collected legitimately. That would be their punishment. All pieces gone.)

A full perma-ban just seems to harsh when it is a mistake in code.
Good lawyers get paid well to exploit loopholes in the law. Until it is changed.
Good gamers get rewarded for loopholes in a game. Until it is corrected.

I'm glad I didn't participate in this Duping but it will be a sad day to lose many great players.
With so much time put forth collecting most of their gear/items/gil legitimately.

But, on the other hand, I'm sure SE is afraid these many players may just be too upset
to continue and may just sell their accounts. Maybe that is why they are being so harsh.

I give an applause to all of those that have been hit and are accepting the punishment.

Question. If you do a player search on the Playonline viewer, would this be a way to find out if you're perma banned or not? Assuming no results come up for a particular toon is it safe to assume this toon has been deleted?

I don't believe so. I have a few in questioned on my FL across many servers and I can still see their POL info just fine. 2 on Garuda, 2 on Pandemonium, 1 on Fairy and 1 on Remora.

So I'm guessing that it wont show you via POL if they are perma-banned or not.

Not to mention those dupers run up the demand of the ingots and shoot the price up, making the legits having to pay for the same price that they have inflated.

It is funny that those who duped salvage stuff tried to keep it a small community. Truth is that if they actually share the info there would be more dupers and perhaps forcing SE to reconsider banning such big amount of player base. For 500 ppl? not going to effect the game at all, so why not just get rid of them?

I don't know about other servers but, ingots have gone up on price after SE fixed the exploit, from 800k to almost 1m, so i suppose was a really small number of people involved on this or our server didnt have anyone using the exploit.
