from what i have understood:

LM-11: first time i hear this, account closed sounds really bad
LM-17: Perma banned from what i know from other LS in ifrit that uses tools to bot and claim HNMs. I have yet to hear this as a 3 day ban yet(from my own understanding)
LM-16(forgot which exactly, i think its 16, kinda mix up with monthly billing message): this is the official 24/72 hours ban. Friend got this because he was using AF1+1 feet running at like 17:00 vanadiel timing and someone reported him. Also my cousin got this 72 hour ban for saying "/s Nigger" in dragonaery

i'm happy as hell this shiznit happened, majority of the ppl who would exploit something as small as salvage for the majority of their pieces would also bot/cast timer kings. soooo i say farewell and good ridence. Time for non botting shells to get something for once.. PA PA PA PEACE FROM BIZMARK!

Did everyone who got temp/perma banned get a message on POL first?

Friend of mine used this in Nyzul while I was along for the ride, but we never got any drops from it. He logged on and was temp-banned for it.

Just checking to see if I can log onto friend list plus to see if I got the message from Playonline while I'm at work.

Here is my problem with this, as an ex-player who couldn't care less about Final Fantasy XI, but is still amazed at how terrible SE is at consistently enforcing their own rules and treating their player base fairly (or even giving the impressions that their opinions matter, at all)

I remember awhile back when that horn that drops from KS99 was incorrectly patched so that Mazurka granted flee speed for a few days. By SE's reasoning, anyone who used that "exploit" (one of SE's own making and one that their apparently non-existent beta testers missed) should be banned because they used it and didn't report it to a GM. Instead it was addressed in a quick patch and people were basically left to enjoy it while it lasted. But now in a much similar situation, except involving duping loots, people are given an immediate ban. SE's note to us seems to apply universally to all incidents of exploitation, yet it is clearly based on which part of the gameplay you choose to exploit.

I don't really care for the morality of it either way, but I am continually astonished at how SE deals with these issues.

We won't suddenly see KB running around unclaimed and an empty colibri camp all the time. It was 950 people across all of the servers.

That and it's only a matter of time before they come back and PL themselves to 75.

I was LM-17'd as well. I'm fairly sure that anyone receiving either message will be told it's a full ban if you try the call center (just a hunch though). Which leads me to ask how do you get a 3-day suspension only? Everyone that has called with 17 got 'perma' when they asked call center, and LM-11 is obvious perma. So where are the temps?

I think it's the "intent" that gets you in trouble in this situation. I was fairly good at making sure it was only discussed outside the confines of the game with the people I chose to explain it to, but obviously when you're in the run and someone has to give directions, everyone can't act innocent in chat-log. Even using this only maybe 4 times over about a 4 month span and receiving nothing (just to help), I think the number of times you used it and the amount of you received was irrelevant to SE in this instance.

At this point I feel a slight bit of relief ironically. Of course I don't know if it's really perma or whatnot I don't know how these things work, but I've very relieved to find that likely I'm the only one in LS hit. There would be a great deal of guilt associated with this if something I said or did led to friend's account being closed. I can really deal if it's just myself being locked out.

As far as this morality issue and cheating, I see this more of just a calculated risk sort of thing. If you're honest with yourself and know that you had intent to use this, you had to know it was 'cheating', or at least violated the "spirit" of the game. While SE really defines what is legit vs. what is cheating and this may not always make sense, I don't see this case being that gray an area. From a player perspective, it was a calculated risk and I/others got burned on it.

From SE's perspective, I think you cannot simply let this one go without at least something happening. I'm sure that as people who have worked very hard to make the game what it is, their creation, they want to see it clean. Whether what they did was too harsh or not harsh enough is up for debate, but I don't think it was outrageous or anything. I personally think bans are to send a message. I know a lot of other sketchy borderline glitches to outright glitches that aren't 3rd party related (aka just programming errors or oversights like this one was) and if I do end up back in 3 days, there's no way in hell I'm going to use them even if I know them. Bans are a good way to deter people from this sort of thing.

I sympathize with those who received the LM-11/17 in the sense that I feel that many players log on to escape reality, if only for a short time. One of the cornerstones of reality/real life is the rule of law - that cutting corners and doing things contrary to what's on a piece of paper (like ToS) results in consequences. Perhaps this just reinforces the notion that, at times, the game and life can follow similar parallels.

Finally, for those riding the morality train, I would definitely score this as a victory in the sense that the community is generally 'cleaner' without players like myself in it. But I'll just finish by playing a little devil's advocate and ask isn't everything just a bit more interesting when someone/some group is pushing against SE's intentions? =P

I remember, early in the game for me (about 4 years ago), I used windower and a 3rd party tool. That is, until I knew someone get banned for it. Then I logged out, completely uninstalled FFXI, the tools and the windower and played only full screen.
Since then, I have never used 3rd party tools. The temptation is there, but when I accomplish things without using these tools, I get more satisfaction then with them

For instance, we had about 12 people camping Shikigami Weapon. 6 of them had AP RADAR and I had my 75RNG/37THF. I spotted the Shikigami Weapon first, before those with me. Do you know how proud I was that I got it legitimatly? To me, it was like a "F- YOU CHEATERS!".

True, some of them were friends and I wouldn't say it for real... but, it felt wonderful.

so what happens to your account when it's permabanned? is your character/items/gil deleted from the server or what? hopefully they'll have some forgivess/come-back-to-FFXI campaign but i doubt it. gonna give it a week or two maybe before we delete our mule/alt. character who wasn't affected. no point in starting over.

I think it can be agreed that punishment was deserving regardless if it may seem a bit harsh or not and those on their "high-horses" laughing were "mostly" in response to those who laughed and claimed SE would never do anything to them duping.
