There are plenty of 'boo' games being mentioned but seriously nothing tops Silent Hill for prolonged bouts of 'oh god what the fuck is that kill it kill it kill it' MINDFUCKS.

Condemned really isn't a "boo"-type game. Not to say that it never does that to you, but it delivers the horror in other ways. I won't disagree on "Silent Hill," though.

This was the game I had in mind when voting "other."

Dead Space and Bioshock are prolly the highest on my list, granted, I don't play a lot of survival horror games.

You found Condemned scary? I only recently picked up the 2nd one for PS3 (will never be able to play the first unless I manage to find a copy of it for the PC laying around somewhere)

Every time the game tries to go into scare mode (hallucination scenes basically), rather than being spooked, I'm thinking "This is the fucking coolest moment I've experienced in a game in a long time" with all the visual filters and eye-candy going off, walking around the map with a big smile on my face.

Perhaps I'm just not far enough in yet, or that the first game is just an assload scarier?
    Spoiler: show
I'm on the stage after the one where you're forced to fight into a caged area against a bunch of baddies until that SKX guy bails you out.

FFXI. Never know when you're going to end up being one of the people SE mistakes as someone else and end up banned over it.

EDIT 2: Has anyone played CoC? Bethesda's best game.[/QUOTE]

Yeah I played that shit on X-Box with a friend of mine. Fucking creepy... H.P. Lovecraft lore is terrifying on it's own, scare factor is raised even higher with Bethesda's brilliant atmospheric techniques.

Eternal Darkness had some creepy moments, but there were no real scares for me besides the one scene with the bathtub early in the game. I liked the game a lot though.

As far as scary games go, Silent Hill 1/2/3/Origins def are it for me, I didn't find 4 that scary and I have yet to play Homecoming. I remember playing 3 and was so scared after playing one night in the dark that I could play for several days.

Nothing really beats silent hill in terms of that scary, overwhelming feeling of building dread, although fatal frame 2/3 come decently close. I think it's a real difference in nuance you notice between western horror games (like suffering, dead space, and to a certain extent condemned) and japanese survival horror which tends to make you scared as opposed to outright scare you.

there's a bunch of mediocre-to-bad survival horror out there too, like Siren (the ps2 one, not the PSN one), Kuon for ps2, Martian Gothic for ps1 (i dont rly remember liking this) and Obscure (both of them).

Also worth mentioning is Dementium: The Ward for DS, which I liked a lot.

Well, I was never particularly scared by Condemned, I guess you could say. But then, I don't find RE even remotely scary. It shocks you, but it has never shown me anything I'd label mentally disturbing. Condemned does, and I consider that better. Plus, there is the cool factor, as you mentioned.

Some people prefer the first game, but I think they're both very solid experiences. I can't really say it's going to get scarier, but the quality of the game doesn't let up until -- and this is not guaranteed, it might not matter to you -- a shift in combat manners closer to the end of the game. I won't say any more about that, though.

About a year ago, my friend had me play Turok 2. I dunno why but it ended up being especially dark (was on an emulator) and I got scared when the first dinosaur things came out.

FEAR, definitely. We had a thread like this in general a long time ago with some pretty funny stories. I couldn't find it, anyone care to dig it up?

I think the scariest game for me in terms of effect while playing (when it was played) was Clock Tower. Silent Hill was a pretty close one too though. I haven't really played many of the newer 'scary' games though, so I can't judge those

I didn't find Clock Tower scary eh. I also listed games like Doom, Fear, etc. but decided to remove em or would end up w/ a clusterfuck of games because I'd have to include the newer titles. Thus the question, "Which is yours?"

Silent Hill for the same reasons already mentioned. Fatal Frame 2 would be next on my list.
