I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dead Space yet. I haven't played it myself, but from all the reviews I've read on it apparently it's supposed to be on the top of the list.

I'll admit haven't played really any 'scary' games. Closest I've got to anything that might be considered scary is the halflife games.

    Fuckin' headcrabs.

    Like 8 people have already.

I didn't find it that scary tbh. Only mindfuckery scares me.

Dead Space was less scary and more jumpy. Lots of stuff jumps out at you.

Silent Hill series was the only one to scare me, I've only played SH2, REmake1 on GC, RE4, Eternal Darkness.

SH2 : Freaking scary, they knew how to use noise and fog to create fear in the player
RE1 : Some parts that shocked but overall not very scary
    RE4 : lol
Eternal Darkness : If you were scared by this at all, please hand in your penis to the nearest hospital.

Silent Hill games by far. Survival Horror is my favorite genre, I've played all the Resident Evils, the Fatal Frames, Clock Tower, etc. Nothing manages to disturb me more than Silent Hill games. Psychological horror will always dominate 'shock tactics'

Silent Hill games manage to disturb you, whereas games like Resident Evil are just a shock here and there that wears the second you kill whatever shocked you in gun blazing glory. Dead Space falls into this category too. The game isn't scary, not sure why so many people are labeling it as if it's the crème de la crème of the horror genre. It's Resident Evil4 in space. Both great games, though.

The ED sequel that fake red rings 360s would be the scariest game ever made.

I'm always trying to donate my penis to the nurse at the hospital. They wont take.

System Shock 2 was downright creepy. And this may be more due to my anxiety, but Clive Barker's Undying got me to jump on a few occasions.

Ugh, I rented Silent Hill: Homecoming just last night, first horror game I played with my awesome new surround sound headphones that I got for Christmas. I couldn't play it for more than 10-15 minutes without having to take them off and switch to TV's basic stereo because the creepy atmosphere was making my stomach sink. Every single area I was in since the start of the game I just got sick while walking around, including my own goddamn house. Silent Hill has always been my favorite horror game just because the amazing atmosphere it makes. I've never had any real fear towards any of the particular enemies aside from Pyramid Head, I fear the entire fucking town, each street, building, room, and hallway.

F.E.A.R. 2 Demo was pretty damn good too, I remember pretty clearly just sitting in a corner or one room while shooting at ghost images moving towards me when I don't even know if they can hurt me or not, knowing that they'll keep coming but being to scared to really continue forward. Any game that can convince me through fear to instinctively do something against my logical thought processes is a good game in my eyes, especially when watching a friend do the exact same thing playing through the demo the next day.

I haven't played too many other survival horrors, so saying SH is my favorite isn't saying too much. RE is the only other series that I've actually played more than one game of the series. Never touched a Clock Tower or Siren game, and only rented the first Fatal Frame, played for about 2-3 hours and got bored so I didn't play it again. Though, any suggestions of some games would be nice.

    Both Fatal Frame games, seriously.
I played them all alone in an old wooden house in the middle of winter when they first came out. Creepy as hell.

    Edit:
It's the whole "serene, silent, pretty, and absurdly deadly"-thing.
In FEAR for example (which was creepy'ish), you were always being hunted, there was shocks, but it wasn't really that creepy.
In Fatal Frame, you feel like the environment is nice, you would go there to relax and enjoy, it's pleasant.
But it somehow manages this insane aura of creepy as hell, constantly bloody keeping you on your toes, listening, looking, waiting.

It will depend on whether or not Silicon Knights wakes the fuck up and makes more Eternal Darkness games rather than more Too Human bullshit that nobody wants. Step one: Get Denis Dyack's head out of his ass.

I remember playing ED at a friends house, some of the events that happened made you freak out. A sequel where your 360 Red Rings would be fucking hilarious. The whole rune system thing was pretty neat, we used to bust those out mid conversation for laughs. Definitely not scary though, maybe when it came out we were scared of some stuff because we were younger though.

Ok, so few weeks ago, i drove back to SF from San Jose (CA). Usually, i took the 101 ( fastest ) but god knows why, i took the 880 instead.

Well, it was 3 a.m in the morning. I am tired. It is foggy. And when i reached the mountain pass, it just suddenly hit me... Where the fuck is everyone? I checked my mirror, no one was on my tail. The other side of the freeway is pretty empty. The radio was having static ( well moutain pass blocked the signal). Then i was like "OHHHHH FUCK!!! NOT SILENT HILL". So i was scared shitless and did like 90 mph. I was so fucking relieved when i see another car on freeway.

Yeah, Silent hill is pretty much it....
