I disagree with Assassins Creed being a medieval GTA IV but I did find that it was helplessly empty game. At the beginning you're like "holy shit this is the most amazing thing ever" then you quickly realize how systematically boring the game really is.
*edit* did I just basically describe GTA IV? lmao oh well
I'll have to go with FFXII. I still haven't beat it yet...how it got 40/40 from famitsu is beyond me.
Either Japan has a different definition of fun and quality, or Famitsu's reviews are as bad, influenced by fanboyism, and overhyped as the worst American ones. Frankly, FFXII is a love it or hate it game. I absolutely love it and think it's a good direction for FF to take. I understand why others don't think that way (too married to strategy guides and spoilers, etc).
I have quite a few of these, but here are some more recent ones:
Anything on Wii - there has never been, and will never be, a more overrated piece of garbage technology in existence. The only decent game, that isn't a remake ala Resident Evil 4, is Smash Bros Brawl and Zelda. Whoever listed this before me is a man among children.
FF 12 - You can spam one button and pretty much win any battle. Character development was HORRIBLE for a FF game.
GTA Any number - I seriously believe the people who invented the lottery invented GTA. All this game does is rip money away from minority groups and the lower class. It is designed in a way they cannot help but steal money to buy it.
Kingdom Hearts - Can't bring myself to purchase a game with Donald Duck, etc after the age of 13. I don't care how good the reviews say it is.
Shadow of the Collosus - God, just no....
Mass Effect - Lol....I don't know how people enjoy this game .-.
That is about it for any "newer" titles that I absolutely think suck, but other people enjoyed.
-FFXII (just boring, could never get into it & hated how you can make any character anything you wanted - where is my individuality?)
-GTA4 (never even unlocked the 3rd city... if they didnt have the whole friend system the game would of been much better, but I HATE feeling compelled to do shit w/ friends in order to keep their bonuses. I was always like "time to go do missions!!" <3 seconds later> "Hey lets go hang out!" < 3 seconds later> "I HATE this game" )
-FFVII (I made the mistake of playing FFVIII and FFIX before FFVII, because by then FFVII just looking horrible and too generic of a story)
All i can think of on the top of my head
Since when the fuck is FFVII's story generic?
You might not like it, or think it's fucking stupid... but it's not generic.
Oblivion, KoTOR, Jade Empire, Fable's etc. no WRPG hold's my interest for long.
I didn't like any Tales of -games either.
Any FPS aside from the first far cry (although only the jungle part) and half lives.
WoW, lulz.
Diablo's
Uncharted
And, I SWEAR to fucking God that if you take every game storyline and simplify it that much 99.9% of games will sound generic.
Sure there's a lot of generics but not that many.
All the GTA's.
All the Halo's.
Guitar Hero / Rock Band / Wii games - anything that isn't a "REAL" videogame.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (HUGE disappointment, I prefer Melee ten-fold)
FFXII (granted, this one, I only tried for a couple hours, but those couple hours bored me so much I turned it off and never turned it back on)
Cloud meets Aerith, goes on adventure, Sephiroth fucks with his shit, he gets enlightened to what really happened in his past, then he saves the world with his friends?
To note though, I'm not necessarily hating on the game for this (but I know I wasn't the first to mention it). Generic doesn't have to be a dirty word, it's simply true that it's an old plotline. It's just as true that many games could be boiled down to that, but that doesn't help one in arguing in defense of their originality.
We'll go with my avatar's example. Vesperia is boy meets girl, goes on adventure, saves world. But Yuri isn't an amnesiac, isn't a whiny bitch, and (the best part) he doesn't fall stupidly head over heels for Estelle. That makes him different than the stereotypical norm.
Still, at its core, the story is generic. Much as it is with many games, if not JRPGs in particular.
All of these things happen, sure... but that leaves out a lot of things; At this point you're just doing your damnest to push a square block through a round hole.
You can't just leave out "the details" when they are important to the damn storyline.
I didn't see mention of Hojo or Gast who are arguably more important to the story than Cloud, Aerith or Sephiroth, they just didn't have as much of the spotlight.
