I don't understand why you believe I'm trying very hard to prove a point. It's not difficult at all, and I'm really not even meaning to argue with you. I'm only explaining something.

The over-arching plot is simple. Perhaps the details add more meat -- as they should -- and the world that it takes place within is fleshed out, but that doesn't mean that the basic story isn't generic. You can leave out the details when you're not retelling the entire tale, as you're only discussing its base elements. Summarizing.

This isn't an insult, and I think you're getting hung up on that as well. People have attached a negative connotation to "generic," but the word still has its original meaning. Coincidentally, I'm a firm believer in the saying, "it isn't about the story, but how it's told" -- I admittedly love JRPGs, far more than the Western variety, and I wouldn't defend them by saying they have original plotlines. Most of them do not.

In fact, if someone specifically attacked one I enjoyed, I'd gladly defend its full storyline by going through the details, but I have to be honest about whether the concept behind it all was original or not. You can't say that most people don't think of Cloud, Aerith, and Sephiroth when they look back on FFVII, and honestly not much else. Not everyone invests themselves into the universe surrounding a storyline (though I do wish more would).

I didn't see mention of Hojo or Gast who are arguably more important to the story than Cloud, Aerith or Sephiroth, they just didn't have as much of the spotlight.
I think that's the point Kohan is trying to make.

At its most basic every game fits some sort of mold but what seperates them is the details that make up the story.

You could go further and say "Unlikely group save the word".

don't forget that FFVII was a turning point in RPG's at the time of it's release. But if you go in reverse and play 8 & 9 before 7... then 7 won't be nearly as awesome as it was for ppl who started w/it. And this is where most of the arguments stem from: those who started w/ 7 and those who went back to play it later.

And holy shit... somebody didn't think the FF7 plot was totally awesome and was kinda bland after playing FF8 > 9 > 7 back-to-back (in that order)? Figured the FF7 > everything else debate was long gone lol. And hate to break it to you... 90% of RPG's share the same basic premise, so it really depends when you play "said" RPG compared to others. I loved FF8 (my first FF RPG) and I could defend it for hours of why I think it's the best, but a lot of ppl didn't like FF8 because of its generic "love story." Don't see me going off on a rant cause ppl disagree w/me

Like Kohan said, its all about how its told. If you strip to bare bones details then Xenogears and FFVII have an awful lot in common with the whole amnesiac boy meets girl meets friends save world. If you legitimately compare the two stories as whole though they have next to nothing in common. Nothing wrong with the term generic but it is what it is. It is worth noting though that FFVII was the pioneer of the belts/zippers/spikey hair character style though so its pretty original in that aspect lol.

I don't agree with you guys on this one.
What's the damn point of stripping everything important from the storyline and then comparing them?

It doesn't accomplish anything and when people speak about generic storylines that is not what they are speaking on and you know that shit damn well.
As I already stated... if you go by those standards 99.9% of games out there have generic storylines and if that's seriously your metric then you are a goddamn retard.

I know for a fact that you are smarter than this Kohan; Stop trying to push the square peg into the round hole.

Xenogears is the greatest game I've ever played.

Being said, FF7 was the most pivotal game I ever played. If it wasn't for FF7 I wouldn't:

    1. Be posting on this forum, much less know what it even is for.

    2. Played FF 11 since JP beta

    3. Played any RPG before, or after, FF 7.

I've had a shitload of fun playing FF 11, other online MMO's, FF 7, and old/new RPGS; I would consider FF 7 the most important release of its time.

I'll take the compliment, thank you for it, and leave it at that, then. It isn't as if I don't have similar feelings of violation when people simply brush off RPG storylines as "generic," so I am sure we'd agree on the important factors (in terms of individual game quality) anyway.

Forgot to mention Resident Evil 4. It's a horrible Resident Evil game, it took "survival" out of the survival-horror genre. Instead, it's a decent action-horror game. Dead Space should have been called Resident Evil 4...

Dead Space should have been called Resident Evil4: In Space. It's very similar, and there isn't a sense of survival anywhere either (lol stasis), or atleast there wasn't for me. Honestly I felt more survival in RE4 where I had to survive in the house with Luis than I did in Dead Space. People are giving this game way too many praises.

This should have been Resident Evil4. YouTube - Resident Evil 4 - Original Though I love both our RE4 and Dead Space.

    ANYWAYZZZZZZZZZ.

    GTA4
Persona4. I liked Persona3, but part4 was basically identical and felt like I was replaying 3. more innovation, please. Makes me appreciate FFs more because at least they try new ideas to give some originality.
Final Fantasy VII. Felt like an average RPG to me. Enjoyed it when it was released, but I don't feel like it deserves all these sequals, prequals and films it's getting.
Final Fantasy XII. 40/40? Famitsu, please pull SquareEnix's cock out of your asshole and don't put this in the same category as Vagrant Story. Thanks. I liked this game, but 40/40? Ridiculous.
Bioshock. Zzz. Didn't hold my interest at all.
Mass Effect. Still trying to figure out what's so amazing here.
    KOTOR. ^ See Mass Effect.

Looking at this list and hearing from a lot of others who've also played the game, where the hell did Bioshock get all its hype from!? This game pretty much sealed the last time I listen to reviews lol.

Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk - Extremely cliché, and crit builds make the game a joke at any level.

DMC4 - Couldn't really get myself to replay more than twice, kinda boring after a while

Gears of War 2 - Don't really much care for.

    Infinite Undiscovery - shitsux

Halo 3 - Wasn't all that good to me.

Left4Dead - To me, the game is only fun with friends, sucks outside that.

FFX-2 - Didn't think it was as bad made it out to be, battles were fun though storyline was pretty lacking lol

Enchanted Arms - Piece of shit

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - The awesome battles are the only thing that saved that game.
