This is not true; I deleted my character in late 2004. Back in the day, the explanation I received from the representative was along the lines of the following:Long time ago it wasn't possible, but nowadays with new policies I think its easy. Btw, epic fail you committed there sir.
A) Everyone gets one chance to restore their character within a certain timeframe of deletion, the "Welcome Home" campaign had nothing to do with this but was just a publicity ploy (the publicity ploy is an assumption on my part, the rep obviously did not say this, but he did say the "one-time restore" deal). There is no hardset timeframe, he mentioned that after ~three months it becomes more difficult but that they have restored characters from over a year ago before
B) At the time, there was a single SE employee in Japan responsible who restored characters "out of kindness" when not working on other things, as such I was told it could take up to three weeks to restore (it took about 36 hours)
C) I actually created a new character when I came back because I was under the impression that I would not be able to restore, it was the same Name / Race / Nation and in the same character slot; none of this was an issue except when naming the character. If I wanted to keep "Wulfgang" I would have to delete the new character (which I did, it was like a LV 7 THF lol).
How did you accidentally delete your main character? For anyone who has actually deleted their character, it is pretty damn difficult. You select "Delete" option and the screen has a red background, then you have to hit enter while holding CTRL + D; at this point the camera zooms in on the character being deleted and you have 30 seconds to abort the process. It may have changed slightly since I did it, but it's pretty damn hard.
