Vista SP1 32-bit issues on reboot

Halp BG Tech forum! I put together a new PC 3 weeks ago and installed Vista Ultimate 32-bit that I got from MS HUP at work. I forgot that I bought it in 2007, before SP1 was released. I downloaded the full thing from MS as I don't like trusting Windows/Microsoft update when it comes to service packs. I've tried the install 4 times now.

The installation seems to go fine, and the reboots during installation don't have any issues. After it's complete and reboots I get to the Vista login screen and enter my password. It goes to a black screen with a mouse cursor (which I can move around) but never beyond that. No shell, no desktop, no nothing. I have to hit the reset button and then go into Safe Mode. I try to wait 5-10 minutes before I do this so I can see the differentiation in time in the eventviewer logs.

These are the 2 errors I see just after I login and before I reboot:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    i8042prt

Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.

As far as I can see the i8042prt is for PS/2 mice and keyboards, which I am not using. I tried plugging in a mouse and keyboard to the PS/2 ports and not using my USB ones but I got the same error. I have a Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse and a G11 keyboard. The drivers and setpoint software for both are up to date as of last Saturday.
I saw a suggestion on ExpertsExchange where someone disabled this driver autoloading in the registry and that solved it for them but that made my situation worse and I couldn't use the mouse at all in Safe Mode.

    Other pertinent specs:

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA775 Intel P45 ATX Motherboard
    Intel COre 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz
    Sapphire 100245L Radeon HD4850 512MB
    GSkill 4GB DDR2 PC2 6400
    WD 500GB hard drive

I've checked for updated drivers on everything in the last week and haven't found anything. SP1 has been out for almost a year so I figured it was somewhat stable and compatible.

    Thanks in advance.

Is Microsoft update KB938371 installing okay?

I've found that the #1 reason why SP1 won't install is because it's conflicting with a poorly written driver that you're using. Try disconnecting as many peripherals as you can when installing SP1. Use a PS2 KB/Mouse if you have one, unplugging external drives, etc.

I'd also try running SP1 with 2GB of RAM. This is a problem normally reserved for 64 bit versions of Vista, but sometimes SP1 (for whatever reason) has issues installing with 4GB of ram in the target machine.

If all else fails, do a dirty install. That just means installing Vista over the top of your current vista installation without formatting. Then try installing SP1 after that. Just be sure to backup your stuff before you do this, just in case.

I'm not at home so I can't check if I have that KB installed or not. I thought about doing a dirty install but really since I've only been on it for 2 weeks and haven't even move all my stuff over if this goes on much longer I'll just start from scratch again.

Thanks for the new starting point, will post back with success or a picture of my fist through the monitor.

Well tried again. KB938371 showed up as installed after the service pack but I still got the driver error. I also noticed right before it was this:

Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.

My understanding was this comes up when the computer is not on a domain (which it's not it's in a workgroup).
