Random Screen Blackouts

I have my laptop connected to a separate Samsung Syncmaster 906 screen since the laptop screen got stepped on and ruined. Recently the screen has been randomly going black for 2 or 3 seconds before it returns to normal. It also gets a few horizontal distortions before it blacks out.

Is this a problem with a video card or could it be the wire itself or the input connections..? The only thing i can add is that my brother has been taking the cable that connects the laptop and screen in and out recently to plug it into another tower we have.

Is this same problem happening when it's plugged into the other tower? If not, then it's a video card/cable issue.

lol thank you i overlooked that fact. No it doesnt do it with the tower. I just hope its something i can fix by changing the ATI settings. Any ideas where to start?

Edit: Ok its the not the cable itself. I just switched cables and the same thing is happening

Then it might be time to take it to a shop and have them look at it.
