Question for people with iPhone/iPod Touch

So, for some reason my family thought I needed a new mp3 player and decided to gift me with a 32 GB iPod Touch for my birthday a couple weeks ago. I rarely use it for anything other than music so I'm pretty clueless for when it comes to useful applications for it. I downloaded the Facebook app, Myspace app, and the Katamari game for it, but that's about it.

So, my question for you BG goers, what apps and games would you recommend for me?

Go to the App Store... there are TONS of apps there (some free some not). Some favorites I have on my phone that I can recommend:

Shazam (music recognition -- amazing, really)
Tap Tap Revenge (probably the best free app you can get -- has online play, tons of songs)
    FS5 Hockey (air hockey)
    Backgrounds (...backgrounds)
Flixster (upcoming movies -- trailers/reviews/showtimes in your area, etc)
WeatherEye (a bit more detailed than the Weather app that comes with the device)
BTires Lite (cool racing game that uses the accelerometer)
DDR S Lite (DDR -- only one song but it's a demo, the full version is still in production)
iShoot Lite (classic tank game where you lob weapons at each other on the 2D environment)
    Topple (Tetris with physics)

All of those you can find the "free" section of the Top25, and most of them have a full version you have to pay anywhere from $0.99-$4.99 for. There's new stuff and updates for the old stuff out all the time, so my advice is to just browse the Top25 as much as possible.

Simcity is pretty cool, interface is a little clunky but it works well in comparison to every other port, and the animations are a little choppy but hey its simcity.

    Shazam - Song recognition
    Weather Channel app
    Flixster - movie release dates/showtimes/trailers
Fieldrunner - castle defense type game
    Trism - puzzle game
    Labryinth is decent
    amazon app
absolute fitness ($15, but if you're into tracking foods/workouts it's worth it)
    checkbook
    Grocery List
Ocarina (not really sure why i listed this one... it's just neat to play with when bored)

    Wikipedia app isn't bad.
Solfree had a solitaire named Demon, the most annoying one I've ever played, but was a good challenge.
Maze Finger, can guess by the title what it's about.
Flipbook lite gave a few hours of joy.

I've never owned an iPod myself, but does it have the tilt sensors? If it does, then the Light Saber app was kind of funny (given you're somewhat fascinated with Star Wars).

The Touch is an iPhone without the earpiece/mouthpiece, gps, 3G/EDGE. Everything else is there I believe. If you're interested in jailbreaking it you can do some neat things like run apps in the background. This is nice for any of the webradio apps, you can send them to the background and do other things with your ipod while streaming. If you're interested I'll do a short writeup on the best jailbreak-only apps.

Just to note, since you got the iPod Touch you can't utilize Shazam (music recognition) since you don't have a microphone.

Can we rename this thread to something like iPhone/iPod Touch apps recommendation thread and make it a sticky? I think it would be pretty useful like the freeware thread.

I have no problem with this, but I have very little expierience with ipod/phone apps, so if someone wants to combine all the good selections (with descriptions if possible) into a formatted post I'll sticky it or just add it to the existing freeware thread.

    Games:

iShoot: fun as fuck, the paid version is about $2? and it has a lot more shit in it, best game on iPhone IMO.
TapTap Revenge: You'll enjoy it if you're into Guitar Hero type stuff.
    Cube Runner: Fun, but repetitive
Tap Defense: Tower defense type game which is actually pretty good, Fieldrunners I heard blows it away.
iTrace: Draw lines on your phone using your finger to guide a stick figure to a goal point.

    Productivity:

Around Me: Gives you a list of local bars/hotels/restaurants/etc. near you
    Shazam: Already mentioned
Evernote: This doesn't get mentioned often, but it's fucking awesome. Voice recorder/to do list-I just use it for the voice recorder which works perfectly.

These are all free, I haven't bought a paid app yet.

Works with second gen iPod touches, the mic isn't built in but the headphone jack is actually a headset jack so you can plug in there.

This may be possible with a hacked iphone.

As for my list of apps:

    Free/Official
uStream - its uStream on your iphone/pod.
Google Earth - Go anywhere in the world on a touchscreen, complete with multitouch support for rotating, panning, zooming.
Last.fm - Great app if you use last.fm, builds recommended playlists based around other user's interests that are similar to yours.
Fstream - Internet radio, supports pretty much any type of audio stream with plans to support video in the future.
VNC - Desktop sharing app, lets you log in to your desktop or any computer you put a VNC server on and manipulate it via the touchscreen.

    Free/Unnofficial - Requires Jailbreak
Cydia - Package management system based around apt, allows quick and easy installation of homebrew apps and their dependencies.
Installer - Same as cydia, has a few different packages.
Backgrounder - Basically the same as alt-tab for your iphone/pod. Hold home for 3 seconds then release to enable backgrounding for the app you are using, launch it from the springboard to resume. Works well with pandora/fstream/last.fm if you want to play tower defense while streaming.
hClipboard - Copy/paste functionality in pretty much any app.
MobileTerminal - Unix terminal on your iphone, useful for manipulating things you can't otherwise get to.
OpenSSH - Allows you to remotely login to other unix machines.
Emulators - NES/SNES/PSX - They don't run perfectly but you can definitely play RPGs or other nonsense that doesn't require precise movement on them.

WiFinder. It'll sniff out wifi networks that won't normally show up on the built in detection, as well as give signal strength, encryption protocol (if any) etc.

Wikitap's kind of nice. It's a little easier search interface to use for Wikipedia than trying to navigate their front page.

I'm a college student, so GraphCalc is kind of nice. It's obviously not as powerful as a real graphing calculator, but gives a much higher res graph.

Shazam's a cool app I've only needed a few times but I think it's iPhone only unless the iTouch has a mic. It listens to a song, uploads a snippet to their servers, and sends you back the title, artist, album, and links to buy it from iTunes as well as Youtube links if there's a video.

I like MachDice ($0.99 last I knew) because I'm a roleplayer...it's a dice roller with a lot of options that rolls when you shake the phone. Also limited 3D graphics (tilt the phone and the dice will change angles)
