Unfortunately, I'm just a measly RDM/NIN, but I'm a pretty competent tank in general. For what its worth though, I'm just a macro-push away from mitigating far more magic damage than an Aegis can alone ;D

Side question: We tend to have a lot of Bards available for every event, would it be worthwhile to use a thunder-kit if it wouldn't be that difficult to put together? That is, assuming Wrath of Zeus and Lightning Spear follow the standard rules of magic damage.

I'm not sure how well you can resist zeus/spear, but personally I'd say its better to stack magic damage down / MDB rather than taking the risk that you eat an unresisted zeus/spear without magic damage down gear. If you fail to resist in full resist gear you'll be taking around 1000-1250 damage with shell up, while a good magic damage down setup will always drop it to about 600-850 without having to rely on luck, which is very much survivable provided your back line is reasonably competent. Of course, you should always make the effort to dodge these attacks where possible.

With about 250 resist, you'll very rarely take more than 70 from zues or spear. I use about 290ish and normally dont resist maybe once a fight?

I don't use it every fight though, as running away is just as easy. Its just fun to sit there and eat big TP moves for almost no dmg sometimes lol.

We normally use 2 PLDs, tanking front and back (far enough away to not get kicked). And random DD/thf moving in 1-2 at a time to ws and run out. Hate is shared pretty well between the two PLDs, going through 2-3 casts of shadows then swapping, then we hold it still when the DDs come in to ws.

2 WHMs should be fine, unless your DD aren't very good at listening to "RUN AWAY WHEN IT CHARGES LIGHTNING". 3 WHMs is normally a bit of overkill. But better to play it safe sometimes I guess.

Lightning spear is avoid if you don't stand in front of DI

Zeus is only 14' range so easy to outrun

I dont run of rampart stance but do not stand closer then 1' it hits harder and

Archeron kick is a "flail" type move aka it does it if you get hate from behind

Thanks! I figured as much was true. I'm looking at ~260 resistance right now, and looking forward to giving it a go on our next Ixion.

It can use Archeron kick without someone having hate from behind.

You should never ever ever ever get hit by it though...

I have seen him turn every which way to kick. Sometimes he pulls a complete 180 without anyone pulling hate just to sucker punch the tanks. Sometimes he turns 90 to the left, then to the right and kicks (in rage, at least).

Once you get used to how it works it's really easy to tank, as soon as you see him charging you have a lot of time to run away from Zeus and Spear.

When he's in his normal mode without the aura I'd just not bother running from his Rampant Stances since they're really weak, kicks aren't as bad in normal mode but it's worth trying to dodge them if you can, or try to move so you are kicked towards the mages so they can cure you right away, as opposed to being kicked away from them and then bound by his attacks which results in you getting fucked.

When he's in his aura mode he tends to double up on Stance and Kicks, as well as charge up attacks. If he stands still right after doing one of his moves it means he's going to do it again, if not he's just gonna go back to melee attacks. Kicks are easier to dodge in aura mode because he usually turns in a random direction.

Anybody figured out a tool to tell his hp %, or is it generally just eyeballing or parsed? I was thinking what they did with his hp bar might get ninja'd into PW if SE doesn't like shells logging to avoid AF...

Ah, didn't know that. I could just see SE saying players used or benefited from the use of a 3rd party program by knowing when 75% was coming.

So could somebody explain to me, I want to test this in person but DI is out of our timezone at the moment, and so I am working on macros & gearsets:

    As a RDM/NIN tank:

Is it better for Rampant Stance to equip Phys Def down (i get 41-47%) and then put Thunder gear in around it (I get self-cast 100 resist, or 100 from a WHM plus MDB, and then another 107 from gear) of 207? The alternative is a full Thunder build and the max I can work out I could achieve is 144 of gear, still with 21% PDT from Earth staff and DS mitts.

And ditto for Wrath of Zeus/Lightning Spear, I can get to up to 29% MDT plus one hopes a fully merited Shell V pushing my to the 50% cap. I could then put on up to 16 MDB from gear, dropping my MDT down to 21%. But to do this I am equipping Coral gear which obviously lowers, if not floors, my Thunder resistance.

So am I better to go for the full Thunder build with native MDB and no magic damage reduction? Or is getting a 50% reduction on a basically unresisted WoZ/LS going to end up better overall.

I'm also working on spellcast locking in my HP gear when present as from memory (logs are at home) I ate a couple unresisted and took about 750, and going from 1700 HP down to 950 unresisted (with the chance of a resist present too) is arguably better than going from ~1200 to say 800 HP with a 50% resisted cast. Although arguably you will lose more hate from taking more damage, so I'm thinking this is not such a good idea for DI tanking.

What I haven't tested is supplementing my PDT & MDT sets with thunder resist stuff. I'm leaning towards thinking that as I can work in about 210 thunder resistance to the PDT set, and about 180 to the MDT set, that this combo option is the best way.

    All advice gratefully appreciated.

You know barthunder helps quite alot...or am i the only WHM brave enough to run up to him...? but then as long as you don't have retarded WHMS full timing zenith slacks/crown it shouldnt be an issue. i'm not sure if elegy works on him either since he just goes the same speed when it sticks.

    #1 elegy doesn't land
#2 why are you getting hit with TP moves?

You can run out of range of every one of his TP moves without any movement speed.

#1 "Dark Ixion recives the effect of elegy" You sure about that? so unless they made him comeplty immune in a recent update since the last time i fought him i'm pretty sure it does.

#2 sometimes he does back to back TP moves, and at some point they do become unavoidable, it's ussaly only rampart stance tho. i always survive them anyway..

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear, 100 from barthunder, then 107-144 from gear.

Thats if I self-cast, but ideally, 120 elemental resist, +15 Magic Defense Bonus from a pimped out WHM. Either way I'm struggling to see how 300 is achievable on RDM, and hoping for a bit of advice so I have the requisite macros all ready for when I get a chance to test it all out.

And yes, you can and should run out of range and I do, but as I run, I would always equip the best gear set for if you do get hit, and its interesting to me to know what that would be and how that knowledge can be applied to other fights & strategies. I'll eat the TP moves on purpose to get the info I need but I was interested anyway.

You're not standing far enough away if you get hit at all with a TP move unless you got bound by it and your whm doesn't erase fast enough. There is no such thing as unavoidable long as everyone does their job properly.
