    Xbox 360 RROD!

Ok, I have a launch 360...and a few weeks ago it finally died, via RROD.

I sent it back to microsoft, and they informed me they will fix it for $120 since its been over 3 years since purchase. I had them send it back to me, without repairing it...as I rather purchase a newer console anyways, probably a Elite for the HDMI.

    but anyways

What are my actual hardware repair options to fix a RROD console? I've heard rumors of it being a heatsink/overheating issue, but not sure. I just wanna use it as a project, to see if I can fix it and have a extra console for my brother. If I break it, oh well i'll be purchasing a new one anyways.

So any guides or anything would be helpful.

    Thanks

All current 360 models have HDMI, so just look for an Arcade model Jasper and swap your HDD (lowest cost option anyway).

My understanding of the root of the RROD problem is that the thing gets hot enough to the point that the CPU/GPU melt the solder and become partly detached from the motherboard. Later revisions use better cooling, and smaller, cooler running versions of the chips to improve this.

Found some guides on it, gonna rip it apart later and see what I get.

Thanks for the info, i'll just grab a arcade console now instead ($200, and can play old xbox games right?)

Backwards compatibility requires a HDD. Assuming that you put yours onto the Arcade, it'll play original XBox games. Out of the box, with just the 256MB internal memory, it won't.

Reason for that is that the old games are played via emulator, which the system needs to download and store on the HDD.
