Looking for a phone to relace my ancient Nokia 6800.

Been poking around, but every phone that seems to meet my requirements everyone and thier mother shoots down... So I guess the real question is, which phone sucks the least?

No iPhones please, I live next door to Apple HQ and have to deal with thier kind on a daly basis... And I don't feel like signing up for the plan that's required in order to get one...

Looking for something that has:

- a full keyboard,
- preferably Windows based, if anything just to see the apple dicks vomit thier purple Kool-Aid...
- Camera's ok, but not required,
- Wi-Fi, as in 802.11b/g Not strictly 3G.
- Decent to good battery life.
- Has to work on AT&T networks.
- Bluetooth is pretty standard, but may as well list it...
- Memory card slot. (some phones don't have em)

Any help would be apreciated, I'd prefere not switching to Verizon if I can help it, their customers seem to be the only people that seem to complain about thier service. And Sprint is out of the question after the bullshit my Ex had to go through with them and thier service.

Most of the complaints I hear are along the lines of crashing phones, failed hardware/screens, really low battery life, horrible reception, etc. So if you got any experience with a particular phone good or bad it'd help. Mostly the only thing i read is bad experiences or fucking idiots that taut the merits of a phone but have absolutely no actual experience with it, or they ramble on constantly about the networks.

It's funny you mention you don't want to sign up for the plan thats required to get one, yet if I want full smartphone capabilities from my last carrier, verizon, it would be the same price as the iPhone monthly. I'd just end up with a less functional smartphone that I would have regretted buying in the first place, just like every phone I've gotten up until apples.

what is the pricing on an iphone plan and what are the different tiers of service? i'd actually be interested to know the side by side price comparison vs a storm and signing up for verizon's data plan. i know it's 30 a month basic unlimited data, 45 with the enterprise package (allows for push email and idk what else) and 60 if you want to tether it to your laptop. it's also extra for the verizon navigator service which i think is included in the iphone package, is it not? (the google maps setup with aGPS enabled that is)

My brother paid $300.00 and then had to sign up for a manditory non-negotiatable 2 year $70.00/month plan that was just phone and data. Text messages and long distance(both the normal kind where you call away and the other sneaky kind where it charges you when you move)had to be purchased separately.

From what I understand there's no tiers of service, just varying phone choices(storage capacity) that set your base price. If you have an existing plan and don't want to sign up for the 2 year contract the iPhone alone costs $700.00 - $1,100, and you still have to get a data plan...

In contrast, most Smart Phones will require you to get a data plan as well (as previously stated by Boyiee), however, if you are 'contract free' you can just get the phone and ignore the data plan. (Which is why I wanted the WiFi, My world is very connected, I don't need 3G)

Note though that if you drop it, you void your warrently and you dont' get a new phone at the 'plan price'. And when you break an iPhone you lose everything if you crack your screen, Not limited to just iPhones mind you, but any touch only interface Phones. (On a regular phone you could at least call if your screen's fucked for instance.) Phone insurance plans might solve this, but I been hearing some "no's " in regards to thet. "Once you drop your iPhone and it cracks, you're fucked."

99.9999999% of phone companies offer phones on 2yr contracts for a discounted price... i.e. you either buy the phone outright for 600$, or get it on a 2yr contract for $99.99 - iPhone is no different. The 2yr contract price for a 16gb is $300.

iPhone being a data phone, requires a data package in order to purchase. Data plan is a standard $30.00/mo.

Next you have AT&T's plans with rollover, I chose the cheapest plan since I rarely use a phone for the calling, and with the way rollover works, if I don't make any calls for a month, I get double minutes for next month, and so on and so on.

There are also 59. 79, and 99dollar plans based on more minutes. Now like I said, If i dont use any of my 450 this month, I'll have 900 next month. If I use 50 next month, 400 will roll over, so 1300 the next month. etc etc.

SMS are 20cents per text, so obviously you need a text plan. I just did unlimited for 20$ a month.

NOTE: I can change any of these things on my plan throughout my term if I want... If I decide I dont want text, I can take it off. Non negotiable? If I don't want the phone anymore, or want to cancel, I have to pay a fee just like with any other phone company. No different.

You umm... basically just said what I said...

He Paid $300.00 Down and since its an iPhone, he can't get it unless he get's the data plan, I.E. $30.00 a month, + the minimum Minutes, I.E. $40.00, so $70.00/mo for 2 years... That's the minimum cost, No lower... I.E. mandatory, Non-Negotiable, Sure you can get more, but you're locked into a minimum of $70.00/mo. for 2 years. Probably getting boring reading what I said three times in a row now...

And no sweety, while the 2year contracts are standard, they're not required. I have never had a contract, and I also currently only pay $30.00/mo for 1k minutes anywhere any time free long distance, plus the usual off peak free, and 400 text messages. However, I text a lot more than that, enough to warent the $20.00/mo extra(couldn't talk that one down). Now you look at those numbers and ask me, Am I new to cellphone plans? Idk chief, I'm not the one paying twice as much for half as much, and stuck for 2 years... I like to think I know what I am doing...

Anyways since this thread has dwindled to regurgitating what I already said back in my face as some kind of "One-Up", I think I am done.

thing about my situation is that my family has a big ass voice plan since they talk a LOT on their phones while i MAYBE use 30 minutes a MONTH. as such i just kick them 10 bucks a month to keep my line active and the let me swipe 30 of their minutes a month w/o complaining on a family share plan. the main phone on the account is up for the new every 2 plan and they're not really interested in a fancy new phone (they actually were thinking about taking my old razor <3 that little bastard.) so i can get a new verizon phone for the new contract price and only pay 10 bucks a month for voice service. from the sound of it, any other service i try to switch to is going to cost over 100 bucks a month for similar service to what i could get on the storm and even if it's not the BEST phone in the world for what i want, it's still gonna do a decent job for a fraction of the price of anyone else. thanks to everyone who posted, you really helped me cement in my mind that i made the right choice in what i'm going to buy.
