Actors and sports celebrities often do charity work (whether because their PR agent suggests it or they genuinely care). Although any career where you make a lot of money from part time work will work. If nothing else, you'd have time and money left over to do charity and travel in your spare time.

Teaching english on ~6 month contracts anywhere in the world, usually for decent pay, and you choose where you go. Plus, I love teaching and languages, so it seems like a good fit for me.

Try Japan or South Korea. but I think you need to know some basic of either Japaneses or Korean to be effective. The pay probably won't be rosy as you would hope, however you do get paid to stay in some fabulous metropolitan areas. If nothing else, it would definitely broaden your horizon and perspectives.

Ok this is gonna seem odd, but BG has answers for everything else so why not this.

I'm trying to see how one would go about finding a job that let's you travel and help people. By travel I mean you'd be flown out to anywhere in the world (I really don't care where, the more obscure the place, the better the experience!) for say 2 weeks through 2-3 months at a time. While there you'd participate in whatever - disaster relief, building houses, teaching english. After your time in the place is done you come home, get a paycheck, a few weeks break, and then go out and do it again.

Does such a job like this exist???? How the hell does one go about finding something like this???

My ex-boyfriend is a consultant for Accenture in Chicago. They fly him out to various places inside the country and outside for long periods of time, he comes back home to Chicago for a few weeks and then he gets sent somewhere else.

He was in Seattle for six months. (This is when we dated.)
He was in Paris, France for a year.
He was in Tokyo, Japan for a month.
He was somewhere in Germany for a year.

Thats all I can remember, but I am sure he has been sent other places too. The downside is you don't always get sent to nice places. Its a really sweet job too because they pay for his plane tickets, the luxury hotels he lives in while abroad (sometimes they'll just rent him a furnished condo to use instead of a hotel), they pay for most of his expenses like food and car rentals as well.

When we dated in Seattle, he was given a suite at the W. It was really nice and I was feeling it because I basically lived there with him. You get spoiled when you're sleeping with consultants. His company paid for all the booze we drank at the W bar.

He gets to keep all the frequent flyer miles and hotel points and use them for personal things like vacations. He gets a ton of vacation time, and he makes a fuck-ton of $$$$$$. Oh, and he gets to have sex with guys all around the world and eat and drink in the nicest places as well.

So basically, he has the job you want. He hates his job actually because he cant have a personal life outside work since he is never home.

He has BA in Chemical Engineering, but he does computer programming stuff for Accenture. So if you want to be a consultant you'll need to be highly educated with skills that other companies need.

Funny you mention that. A buddy of mine is in South Korea right now doing TEFL.

I don't expect the pay to be great, just enough to live off of and have a little spending cash...which is what he says he gets. That's fine with me.

I don't believe you need to know any foreign language to teach abroad. JET for example, will hire people to teach English in Japan who have no knowledge of Japanese. Japan requires you to have a four year undergraduate degree to work in the country though.

S. Korea and China though have no restrictions and anyone willing is able to apply. Perhaps the nicer schools look for some knowledge of the national language, but for the most part you're in the clear.

Regarding your concern about your lack of Chinese language skills, I would venture to say that the vast majority of teachers who come to teach in China for their first time can barely even say hello in Mandarin. These days, there are plenty of people who speak English in China and if you find a decent place to teach English, the school administration should be able to help you with everything that you need.

The tips section talk about learning basic phrases like hello on the plane before you arrive. I think thats good enough evidence that Korean isn't needed to land the job.
