If your wife had a stroke and had a 50/50 chance of living through the night, paying money to a stroke research group isn't going to help her make it that night and neither is picking up a medical book or going to Web MD. We can't always be in control and sometimes people look to strange places for comfort. The person who posted this sounds like someone who just plays this game with this other person and felt either helpless or saw this as a good way to get some personal attention, however, we don't know either way.

I've never called for the forced cleaning of this thread, rather ask for the obvious derailing to stop. Can I do shit about it? No. But usually when derailing happens, it's moderated unless it's in the spam forum. I pose it more as a question as to why this can happen here but not in other places? I could go into the gun thread and start talking about my favorite guns in anime? Why do we have general in the first place if this is ok? Why not just make it all spam forum?

First of all, general has been here long before spam. There is no why is there a general, the question is why is there a spam? (A question I'd gladly answer, if you actually are that thick.)

Second of all, derails are, always have been, and always will be part of forums. Getting rid of them only matters in important threads. This thread may be about something important to somebody...but we don't even know this fucking person. In any case, if the derail is more interesting than the original topic, it dominates. That's how it happens. Deal with it.

Topics in general aren't supposed to be started as chill out and chat threads, but they can evolve into that somewhat (there is an implicit limit, though.)

I'd hate to add something useful and ontopic here but in all honesty that 2nd point is pretty important. If he was told that BG was praying for him and whatnot, it might up his spirits somewhat, give him a strength boost, a little confidence, which is quite important when fighting something. If he's depressed, and already in a weak state, then he's at higher risk.

Unless he is dying this week, contributing to research can only help. It is very possible most of the diseases we currently have as a species will be cured in our lifetime, via proper research and funding.

And as boyliee sarcasticly said, prayer wont help him at all either. Prayer is GREAT for self meditation and making the OP feel better and cope with hard psycological times. However, BG is neither in a trying psycologically time, nor do we need to make ourselves feel better. That combined with the fact that no one here of intelligence beleives that metaphysical forces will heal his friend if we all chant in our houses reinforces the fact that actions > intent, physical responses > prayer, and posting on BG asking for prayer > all.

Also, more importantly, reference the Mayo clinic's double blind study where they prayed for 50% of heart patients and told half of each segment they were praying for them. Obviously there was no difference in recovery/death rates between the 2 segments, however it was noted that people that were told they were getting prayed for had more complications, perhaps because they thought their condition was more serious.

Telling someone you are praying for them isnt always the best thing.

Kaylia's saying it completely the way I see it. There's a good chance that praying isn't going to do shit for this person, but neither is donating to medical research or breaking out a medical book when you're in a point of emergency.

I completely agree with you Neosutra that if you care about the friend and want to try to help them in the future, you could do the things you mentioned, but at this current point where he's already in pain and possible on the verge of death, none of the things you said are going to help any more than offering well wishes.

And for the record, I think that calling the thread stupid is perfectly fine. At least he's talking about the thread itself. (again, this is my personal opinion in case people try to call me a backseat mod again)
