I think the point that's been made is that by wishing well in this thread and by claiming that you're offering prayer to someone who wants it would actually mean that you are doing something physically for this person. They seem to want and possibly need this outside reinforcement, and again I will state that there's nothing wrong with comforting the people watching this person suffer either. Look at how often you hear of certain patients who are faced with death who are actually coping better than the people who are getting left behind. You need to come face to face with a real medical emergency to realize that it's not just the person who's sick who's suffering.

I just don't understand why it's so automatically assumed that these people are just rubbing the belly of the Buddha for good luck when in fact nothing of the sort was said, and based on Yotevol's recent response, it sounds like they were taking at least some proactive steps in their own way. In a way it's almost like getting get well cards. Some need those things more than others, even if it comes from complete strangers.

And Yotevol, even though I don't know this person, and these people are right that it's impossible for us as humans to show personal worry or care for those we don't really know, you've humanized this guy at least a little bit in my mind and I really do hope he pulls through. I wouldn't wish something like this to happen to anyone let alone someone so young. From where I'm at, there's nothing I can do physically to help this person other than indeed hope that he can recover. It may mean nothing, but it's all I personally can do for him.

Because the thread is labeled "Please pray for my friend", and not "please send messages of comfort and write letters to let them know other people wish him well in an attempt to improve his psycological state and increase his white blood cell count".

Prayer does nothing physically for him.
Studies have shown and were quoted here that being told you are getting prayed for does nothing good for patients (even causing more harm).
Placebo effects of prayer are only benefitial to the people praying and no one here needs to get through tough mental times due to this guy being sick (that I know of).
These things have been stated many times in the last few pages. Stop saying "it cant hurt, he may feel better", it just isnt an accurate statement. You can just as easily say "it cant help, he may feel worse".

However, I have no problem with the OP requesting messages to print to give to his friend, even if I have stated this isnt the right venue.

I pray for you and your sandwich. I hope that next time you just go to Wendy's and get 4 double stacks with no pickle in order to preserve your finger and not waste a sandwich in the process. Watch for allies and Godspeed.

I'm honestly not trying to disagree with you that it could potentially be bad for this person, all I'm trying to say is that in this particular case, there seems to be a decent chance that having prayer and well wishes sent his way could actually be beneficial. A case of 750 people where 350 were prayed for and 350 were given therapy where a few more people died on one side than the other isn't indicative of the human race as a whole.

Think of people off fighting wars etc. Sometimes the support of your country, even though they're blank faces to most of us is enough to get some soldiers through the possible hell they face every day, and that's all that saying you're praying for someone or offering them well wishes is doing; offering support when there's nothing else you can do for them. It's undeniable that state of mind can alter someone's health and determination drastically.

In this case, we have no idea if prayer will do anything for this person, but they asked for it and I'd like to think that the people close to this person have at least a little bit better understanding of him than we do. Who are we to judge what's positive or negative in this case? If you're just trying to point out that we should all try harder to help our friends and family in need, I can't see any complaint in that, but there's no denying the amount of pointless negativity that came from such a simple, easily ignorable request on the OPs behalf.

Someone once stated that Laughter, is the best medicine.
When someone is facing a potentionally life threatening problem, statistics show that those that have people that care, friends and family, around them often give them a better fighting chance at survival.

My friend, Kaykins, has decided to choose a route that includes positive responses from threads such as this, since she can't physically touch him through his treatment.

So, when visiting hours allow, she sits there and talks with him while giving him things like this. Also, when she visits, he responds positively when they talk about FFXI.

I know, if I were in his situation, and a loved one came to visit, the last thing I would want to talk about would be what's wrong with me and how much pain I am in. So, FFXI talks are good. I'm glad it's a topic they share and brings him a smile during her visit.

Thank you again, to everyone that actually cares.

    Respectfully,
    ~Yotevol
Glad to hear he is fine.

Guys I'm really sick........ [Insert something involving FFXI here]

Sorry, If I'm sick or dying... last thing I care about is a videogame, or a forum for a videogame. Kinda sad.

And guys... Laughter is the best medicine... so lets take out all the bad replies to this thread and lie to him so he gets better! Sorry but if you want him to laugh he should probably get the thread in its entirety.

If you made some decent friends in game and spent enough time with them, I don't see why it would be so unreasonable to think about FFXI in a time like that. Especially if it's something you did regularly or events you did weekly. Once you started missing them, I highly doubt it wouldn't enter your mind at least a little.

And then there's people like Wopa who would be on their death bed trying to buy as much currency as he can before death so he can put on his tombstone, "Five relics and no use them because I'm dead. Aren't you jealous."

I actually prefer body armor and solid training for my troops over good feelings from people back home, but to each their own.

And dont say the request of the OP is easily ignorable when you cant ignore my post stating the inappropraite venue of the request and the pointlessness of the prayer. Prayer wont help him, and will only distract from real world help, and in the worse case will simply degrade his condition as stated before and as referenced via studies on the subject. Your points are invalid and restating them over and over doesnt somehow give them foundation.

So in other words, his friend is no better than the censoring the government tries to put on the media!

"Oh hay guyz, our friend won't like all the mean shit you said so we're replacing all the negative comments with good wholesome things."

    So that this:
And dont say the request of the OP is easily ignorable when you cant ignore my post stating the inappropraite venue of the request and the pointlessness of the prayer. Becomes:
Don't ignore the OP's request guys, and don't ignore this post. It's inappropriate to not pray for his friend. It will help him, and it will distract him from the real world so that it can help! In the worst case, it will at least help improve his mood about his condition and as stated before any negative points are invalid. I restate over and over, LONG LIVE THE OP'S FRIEND! MAY HIS DAYS BE FILLED WITH RAINBOWS AND MUDKIPS!

Definitely. Who isn't going to laugh about it, aside from a prude (e.g., the OP)? We covered pretty much all the funny material, and awesome stuff. This thread has talk about cocks, food, anime, robots, and what the fuck else does a nerd need? Seriously, we know they all love cock.

But not necessarily the type of cock spelled Cow_k. That's just too complicated when you're sick. Original terminology or get the fuck out.

Sounds like to me this person wants us to mass pray for his friend...Idk if you've heard about but it's called mass praying (for lack of my spelling...) were you get a large group of people praying, thinking, wishing what have you for a certain out come to happen.

But whatever the OP is trying to do g/l, sorry to hear that your friend very sick...hope he gets better.

But in reality unless it's a close friend, family member or a loved one I could care two shits about what happens to other people in this world....but hey g/l with life and hope he does get better.

If a thread about me being sick and/or dying turned into pictures of robots.... I'd want to see that shit right the fuck away. Thats fucking awesome.

It's an injustice not to give your friend this thread in its entirety, you probably made him sicker by filtering it. Good fucking job you killed your friend.

In all things, with troops or otherwise I'd prefer giving them every advantage be that personal support, training, body armor, mental conditioning, etc. Throwing out an entire extra venue that could be beneficial for some because you personally find no comfort in an invisible boogie man just makes little sense to me.

I should have looked for this earlier too, but from the same place you found the link for your study are links to these as well:

BBC News | HEALTH | Heart patients 'benefit from prayer'
BBC News | HEALTH | Prayer 'works as a cure'

Or there's this wikipedia article that's representative of both sides:
Efficacy of prayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Now you tell me which of these scientific studies are correct. From where I'm sitting, it's again, a case by case scenario.

    From the wiki article:
Many studies have suggested that prayer can reduce physical stress, regardless of the god or gods a person prays to, and this may be true for many worldly reasons. According to a study by Centra State Hospital, "the psychological benefits of prayer may help reduce stress and anxiety, promote a more positive outlook, and strengthen the will to live."[5] Other practices such as Yoga, Tai Chi, and Meditation may also have a positive impact on physical and psychological health.
And for the people who freaked out about the Wopa joke (yes, it was just a joke, one based on the behavior of a man who seems to not want to give up on FFXI no matter what), now who has a stick up their ass? But hey, I agree, robots are cool. Give me an orbital frame any day.
