Either way, it's hard to legitly argue him against Griffey as Griffey's career later on was just riddled with so many injuries.

And by "pure hitter", do you mean contact and power numbers, or just the best hitter in general when it comes down to average? If it's the latter, than it'd be very easy to argue against that. Ted Williams for one was a pretty damned good hitter..

You have to factor in the walks when discussing Bonds, and not just the intentionals later in his career. Pretty much his entire career, especially when he was winning MVP all the time, he was one of the league leaders in walks. The same was true of Williams as well.

I meant of recent history that there's no doubt, and that it's a tough argument overall.

Yeah, that's true about the walks and all that, but yeah.. if you said recent history, I'd tend to agree. That's where I was confused, because there's tons of players of old that could match up with Bonds and prove to be super scary.

Even if you throw out every season in which he was suspected of doing steroids, he still had 499 home runs.

The guy is amazing, and the only reason he didn't get his due respect at the time was the Sosa/McGuire bullshit in the late 90's.

Baseball will be so much better in ten years, when players like Pujols and Miguel Cabrera will be breaking records with no questions about their juiciness. I think the Mitchell Report was a double-edged sword, yes it presented an abundance of worthwhile information but there was also a sense of "okay everyone who's on steroids has been exposed, glad that's over." I think this proves that wasn't the case.

I'm almost scared to mention any players during the last two decades as being "the best non-steroid hitter of our generation" because next month or next year they could be implicated in another story like this. Off the top of my head, power guys would be Griffey, Manny, Frank, even Jim Thome or Carlos Delgado have been very productive. As far as pure hitters, once again you have to look at Frank, and Chipper Jones never gets mentioned but has the numbers to back it up, also might consider Vlad Guerrero. I agree that Bonds is still one of the best hitters ever, regardless of what's happened.

And lol at the Michael Phelps argument, the only people who care should be late night TV hosts, they have fodder for pot jokes for the next couple weeks.

HGH is what most players have been taking post 2005, not steroids, since the MLB has not been able to formulate a test for HGH that's been agreed upon by the MLBPA

I was pretty devastated to hear this, considering how much I'd defend A-rod to people who bash him religiously (and to everyone who says hes a choker, he's had like 4 monster post seasons).

I don't know what to think anymore. I certainly want him on the team, but it's like every day there's something else with this guy. We already know A-rod isn't going to handle this well, first because he never handles anything well, and second because he can't outright admit to it. I really wanted him to be the clean baseball player who would bring baseball out of the steroid era, but it looks like we'll have to wait for someone else to claim that title.
