    Mutiplayer or MMO game suggestions

    Hello,

My friends and I have been playing FFXI for a long long time. We're thinking about moving onto something else. I havent followed any other games in years now, so I dont know whats out there. I was looking into maybe another MMO or a good multiplayer game (diablo-esque). Aion looks nice, but I think its might be too PvP based for our wives likings. WoW doesnt interest us. So sticking away from PvP focus MMOs, what are some suggestions? Doesnt have to be one that is out right now, but looking to pick up something different by summer.

Why do we use the term "wow clone" on everything now days? But yeah WAR, lotro(mainly pve but mpvp is good) are the only ones I can think of for the moment.

If you've played wow or l2, I don't think there's anything drastically different around these days. I haven't heard of a good eq clone coming out either, or pve focused mmo :/. Well, diablo 3 is coming out someday, but you'll have to wait quite a bit for that! Hrm, maybe phantasy star universe, but I hear that sucks too.

If you played an enjoyed FFXI you won't find a better Mmorpg atm. However if your into PvP, Warhammer PvP is lotsa of fun. EQ2 probably has the most PvE and "other stuff" content and mildly entertaining PvP as well. I honestly can't figure out what people like about WoW.

I liked WoW because I didn't have to be logged on for 4+hours to feel like I accomplished something. If you only had an hour to play, you could log on and get pretty good exp/money just by doing quests.
that being said, I got bored with WoW by lv 40 and quit.

I know that Guild Wars has a fairly good PvP system, plus the fact that it is free helps a lot too.

LOTRO, EQ2, and Vanguard are the other decent PvE focused MMOs beside FFXI.

LOTRO is very casual and has virtually no end-game raid content. It does have an excellent story-based questline that runs through the whole game, but I'm willing to wager you already know how that story goes.

EQ2 is sort of a middle ground. It has a decent amount of end-game raid content. It can be played pretty casually. There's a ton of both solo and group content all the way up until end-game, and the newest expansion added some end-game group content if you want stuff to do, but don't want to join a full-blown raid guild. The downside is that there are a shit ton of classes, and the balance is terrible (Paladin/Shadow knight + summoners are near useless at high levels. The four Bard and Enchanter classes can easily eat up half of a raids slots. Etc.)

Vanguard is the most hardcore of the three. It's not very solo friendly, so you'll rely more heavily on groups just like in FFXI. Even though the level cap is 50, it's a bit more of a grind than the 80 levels of EQ2. There's a heavy dose of end-game raid content, and even a few AV/PW type "impossible" fights that 98% of the game's population will never do. As an extra note about Vanguard, it sucked really badly when it first came out, so a lot of people have that initial impression still. The game has been improved upon drastically, but has remained difficult for those without massive amounts of time to invest.

This. There's a reason it's so amazingly popular.

I played and enjoyed FFXI because I didn't know better. Aside from an interesting job system (which is horribly broken and imbalanced) and good storyline (which is slow to come out) it has nothing else. Community exists in all games, it's not specific to any game.

WoW isn't perfect, but it's the best. And aside from what others say, it's a fairly solid PvE game, the loud players are the PvP ones which is why that gets so much noise about it. And the latest turn of events with development are just amazing and will make sure things are done well for quite some time.

Warhammer is basically a WoW clone on a lot of levels, but not all of them. You can deny it all you want, but it is true.I played Warhammer briefly, but quit because I actually felt like I was playing WoW. Of course there are differences so it's not like it's the same exact thing, but for me it was enough to put a bad taste in my mouth.

WoW isn't bad until you are almost max level actually. Maybe not so now since I haven't played at all during WOTLK and I quit before all the badge rewards really, but previously, the only way to get epic level gear was by doing 10/25 man raids and after you farm the instance about 10 times, you want to kill yourself with rusty spoons. Now their is badge gear so you can collect badges to turn in for equal level gear to keep yourself up to date... in a sense.

Just unlike FFXI where your gear can, and sometimes does, last forever, expect to replace everything in WoW except maybe your trinket...

Edit: And there ARE PVE servers so you don't have to worry about getting killed by other players who want to PVP. At least give it a shot. They got the 2 week trial thing. At first you might find it boring, but it's not all that bad. I just highly, highly, highly recommend avoiding raiding. It's not that it's not fun.. It's just so time consuming that you'll be doing it almost every day and since you're point based in most cases, you're afraid to miss a raid because you might fall behind on points and not be able to obtain the item(s) that you want.

Warhammer existed long before Blizzard. That's the point of the comic.

I like how you get on WoW and raiding and seem to speak well of FFXI. Fafnir is so fun and exciting 3 years later, right? How much you'll enjoy raiding has a lot to do with who you raid with. This goes for every game to some degree as well. My WoW guild can clear almost all content in one raid night, and if not for our attempts at OS3 drakes (basically a "hard mode" encounter for phat loot) we'd have all content down in just a night and a half and the rest of the week is all free time. Fast content is far more enjoyable when it's "old" than stuff that takes you a while and that's how WotLK is so far, trash has been greatly reduced and it's not much of a pain to do content on farm.

You sound like you were in a terrible guild. There's no reason you have to be in a guild that raids daily...even in BC my guild still only raided 3 times a week, I'm sure that option is around on many realms too.
