Abyssal Earring!
I have White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Dark Knight, and Scholar level 75, so for my situation it works best. I list White Mage, because with sub Scholar you can actually land some decent Aspirs using Dark Arts. I really only use Blue Mage with sub Thief, and exclusively using Sneak Attack, Trick Attack, Chain Affinity. There's really no need for 5 Sword Skill or the laughable Dual Wield there. I have Ninja too, but I hate it, and so wouldn't bother choosing equipment for it to the detriment of other jobs. My Bard doesn't really gain much from any of the earrings, since it just always uses Musical Earring and Novia Earring. As for future jobs, Summoner won't need one, and Paladin would like Knightly Earring, but again, not to the detriment of 5 other jobs.
oh ok
If its not worth the thread, don't post in it and let it die.
The depressing thing about this thread is how little any of the earrings help my WHM. I ended up picking Suppanomimi, simply for the occasional WHM/nin soloing (which I don't do that often). What other pick was there, Knight's Earring for Shield/Divine +5?
I suppose I regret not getting Abyssal Earring now. This was before /sch made INT and Dark magic of any use to a WHM, and I've leveled up BLM since then.
I had this dilemma before. I had Suppanomimi from my NIN main days and loved it to death. I didn't want to give it up even after I got my Amano. It is hands down the best utility earring out of DM. That nobody can argue. However, in my case, my focus shifted. I used to take pride in making my NIN best at every possible role it could take, even NIN/BLM nuking (lol, I know). But I thought about it more and figured, if my focus in a fight is to deal damage then I'd most likely be SAM and not NIN, especially with an Amano. My choice here is which of these DD-enhancing earrings to choose. I still use my NIN daily without fail. Every single damn day. But in the situations I use it it's more of a focus in tanking/surviving/lowmanning and damage is never an issue or my main purpose.
Thus I switched to Bushi. That's my reasoning and may not apply to everyone. Results may vary, etc.
a dual wielder without suppa is losing far more damage potential than a sam without bushi, while gearing your best job is nice(especially considering he has a relic).. the people arguing suppa is retarded are like the guys who have mage jobs leveled essentially wearing full fucking af1 and can't stick slow/elegy because they're 'just jobs for ls' and the person only buys gear for their melee
I'm a MNK, and former man/joy WAR but now g.axe WAR/SAM, and PLD + RNG.
I haven't touched my suppa in ages. Only place I will use it is DD PLD with joy/justice, and lolddPLD, right? Shield is just too good, even in solo situations like campaign.
None of the DM earring seems attractive to me enough.
actually Ruke[I can't tell if u being funny or mistake by using ryko] had suppa first and has now traded in for bushi, since nin only got used for tanking. Suppa maybe slightly more useful but when you get use of it >5% of the time, it's kinda meh, where as a relic sam is like going to be using bushi a large% of the time, so going to be of more benefit.
A Sam with Amano vs a dual wielder with no relic...I don't think you'll ever be dual wielding for damage output unless you're just bored, or feel like doing less damage than you could/should be doing...so sorry, I think your argument there is flawed.
Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong sinking more money into 1 job before another, IMO, assuming you play it a decent bit. There is a problem when people full gear 2 different melee jobs, and ignore their mage jobs...Personally, I leveled jobs for their versatility, I think people that have nothing but mages or nothing but melee are wasting a lot of potential.
Let's first assume I get an xp invite... if not I would be /whm for soloing anyways... or /dnc whichever....
Since BST is my only melee job... and with Snarl, going /war is far better than going /nin.. I might as well drop my Suppa for Beastly Earing. Since +5 Axe skill far out weighs the chance I will ever go /NIN...
On the other hand... I could get an Abyssal for my WHM/SCH ....
oh wait this is only about Bushi?
I think your wasting your potential not picking one type of class and sticking with it.I think people that have nothing but mages or nothing but melee are wasting a lot of potential
There will never be a time where a fully merited RDM with amazing gear is not worth bringing, same for about 12 other classes as they all do something unique that helps a lot(the other 8 aren't as unique or offer as amazing things as the first 12).
Take a decked out RDM, now tell him to go level SAM? Why? He needs to get 2-3 subs to 37 which he has to gear with stuff he has never bought because all he played is caster classes and now has to spend money to gear up a SAM that has every piece of gear opposite of caster gear. If he would then spend his time leveling BLM he would have the subs leveled have full staffs, have errant ect ect ect ect with the gear and now instead of having a decked rdm and a shitty geared sam you have a decked rdm and a decently to amazingly geared blm off the bat which gives him more time to finish the class then spend time getting the basics like he would with sam.
Now why don't we add an additional 20 pages to this post?

For TANKS both RDM and PLD(nin need not apply) I say Magnetic is better!
If you are content with everything you are currently doing in FFXI, fine.
If not, there are some shells that take only people with mages leveled (do you think that everyone should have a mage job? Most shells tend to think so)
There are also some groups that won't take someone with only mages leveled (my salvage group is 1 of those...we don't need bards, we don't need red mages, we don't need white mages...really don't care how good your job is on either of those, if you don't have a melee to go with it, we're flat out denying you).
In any case, when you start getting people together for something (and this matters a lot more for lower-man events than other crap), and you have 3 people with only mages, but you want a melee burn setup, you get screwed.
Really, getting a half decent sam that can perform, doesn't cost -that- much, and can even be done without a Rajas (though Rajas is a far superior ring to Tamas, for what it adds, IMO).
I honestly think you overrate the time needed to get subs, and the difficulty to make enough gil to afford better than average gear on all your jobs. I've done it on all my jobs, and am at the point that I'm buying overpriced accessories that I don't really -need- to do well (and have been there for a long time).
I guess if all you do is dynamis, and everything else you do is with 2-3x the number of people needed, then it's irrelevant...otherwise, versatility is a very good thing to have.
Relic sam/drg, brutal+wyvern, ws in triumph earring?
I mean at that point it comes down to how much you use sam/war for anything vs. how much you use nin or DWjob/NIN to DD. Assuming an amano sam /war tanks pretty often, bushi will be better, but if you don't tank on SAM, then you might as well /drg, use wyvern, buy a triumph, and keep the suppa.
Ridill sams should prob get a Suppa also.
/drg is overrated, and situational. It is a solid sub, but it's really very very close vs /war (when Ruke made his post, I sent him some PMs and discussed with him there, but his math erred in favor of /drg).
BTW, that ridill comment wasn't serious, but if we want to talk about .1% of the samurai out there, why not discuss the .1% at the other end of the spectrum. If you consider sam your main, I would -strongly- encourage a Bushi.
Oh you silly goose.
i picked suppa because it lets me attack faster, more damage overtime, compared to abyssal, which grants me 5 more att and some acc
even if i have an amano, i will still pick suppa
however if i have no kikoku, i will pick abyssal hahaha
FUCK THIS BULLSHIT SE GIVE US A SECOND EARRING ALREADY. I WONT MIND KILLING THEM OVER 10 TIMES FOR IT
Well.
Way back when I did DM and my only jobs were MNK and BLM I picked Suppa because I planned on playing every job to some extent and Suppa seemed the most useful. I regretted a bit not getting an abyssal for a while, however now that I have DNC and COR on the way I'm feeling the suppa love.
Guess I have to jump on the suppa bandwagon too...
i always have been an advocate of suppa.
I guess its due to the fact i used nin to solo on and liked the added haste so fights would go faster. However i had sam and drk also that i wanted an earring for.
nowadays i just have mnk pup and sam on my char.... and i still feel like i want suppa in case i ever lv nin/blu/thf/pld/war(yes)/dnc/cor...... All of these jobs get good use from suppa at some point. Sadly though bushi is only good on one job and one job only ><; for everything else its a fancy 500k triumph earring.
Really bushi is nice for sam, but when your looking at wyv earring for xp (mmjsp) and not being able to use it with polearm then from merit standpoint its quite useless. However it would be very nice on HNM. In this case though your still looking at only 5 attack 2str over say hollow earring (4.5 acc~). This is nice but your dmg comes from ws not dot so much here, in which case id use the 4 str earring at night and 2 str triumph in day which probably would balance out my dmg to that of a bushi wearer.
I think key things we need to look at is not just ONE earring we chose but the combination of DM and APOC earrings.
I figure suppa/hollow or bushi/ethereal best for most ppl because by now most of us have a DD and tank job. I dont condone mage earrings simply for the fact that as blm you will be using moldy/novio, as whm you will have probably novia and another -enm earring, as rdm your going to macro in int or mnd earrings after using up your mp set (loqua/astral for example). I guess 5 conserve mp be nice, but i dont think its going to overcome how nice 3 mnd or 2 int can be for rdm and how much -10enm pwns for whm.
if it helps i will probably go bushi/ethereal for time being, bushi since sam is my main flashy job and in the off chance i lv nin again ill be /drk meaning ethereal will not only be awesome but also i wont be meleeing. Id prefer to just dd tank on sam ;D unles mobs to hard where nin/drk be needed. Then the fact i like the idea of not gimping attack on pup and mnk solo in effort to evade more, you kinda get best of both worlds.
also i was considering blu.. suppa would rock on that but im sure with sam id not be xping on it, and with pup and mnk not soloing on it. Be strictly for fun and HNMS where id be /thf anyhow making DW pointless.
shit there is just so many options... just pick what ya like, if your have second thought you probably picked wrong so go repeat it ;D I wont think any jobs gimp for not having the 2nd ear slot having the best earring for them outside of brutal... and for mages idc as long ya your curing my butt hehe.
