Bert Sugar said it best: Boxing is like playing chess with two human bodies, MMA is like playing grand theft auto.
Bert Sugar is a fucking moron. This is the same dude that said MMA takes no skill at all, and the fans are all tat'd up bikers.

Boxing sells because professional boxing is rare to see, that doesn't make it a good sport.

The fact that boxing still outdraws/outsells the hell out of MMA baffles me.

I guess it's like gay rights, the old people just have to die off.

I think he means bouts that are actually of good quality opponents. Like, off the top of my head, I can only name maybe three big name fights in the past 3 years that I was actually excited about. Those were... Hoya vs Mayweather, Mayweather vs Hatton and Margarito vs Cotto. Boxing needs more big name fighters aren't retired.

Eh, I lost interest in boxing right before Julio Cesar Chavez got his ass kicked ;x Ricardo "Finito" Lopez was one of my favourites too, he never lost a fight.

Back in the days I used to spare w/ a friend, well I wouldn't say spare lol. But he was into boxing and would participate in exhibition matches @ the Grand Olympic Auditorium here in LA. I think he'd get like $800-1,000 per fight, that was a lot when I was in HS lol.

MMA's popularity is like American Idol, just because more young adolescents watch it doesn't mean that it's any good.

The age demographic the UFC gets is 18-34 year old males. It's nothing close to the age demo of American Idol, and will certainly last in popularity for a long long loooong time to come.

You mean like how organized Boxing has lasted for almost 200 years (and counting)? Maybe I'm misinterpreting what some of you guys are saying about Boxing, but it's almost as if you think it's dead just because you like MMA more. I'm 29, and I can't stand MMA, I'm not sure how accurate your demographic is. But I will agree that more adolescents would prefer the brutality of MMA over Boxing, and thus would cater to that sport first.

I still say that the marketing of Boxing, and the advent of HBO PPV is what's brought Boxing downhill. Some people say it's because there are too many weight classes, and multiple titles per division, but it's always been that way. Boxing needs to be brought to an open forum again, Friday Night/Wednesday Night Fights on ESPN not withstanding (Though I have learned about up and coming fighters through those programs, such as Allan Green)

One thing is for sure, it's difficult to convert a boxing fan to MMA, or an MMA fan to Boxing, if not impossible.

The problems with boxing are some pretty large ones in comparison to MMA. First off you have basically any top name boxers fighting either on PPV or HBO only. The fights never get rebroadcast unless they are such phenomenal fights that they land on Espn Classic. In boxing you have title holders ducking top contenders(for the most part, but there are definitely exceptions.) Whereas in MMA you have titleholders clamoring for fights against their top rivals.

Now add on top of that the fact that MMA a few weeks after a UFC event, it usually gets broadcast on Spike TV. MMA is a much much more visible sport in comparison to boxing at this point. Is it better than boxing? To me it is just because you really don't see the kind of antics you see in boxing. I mean has a top name MMA fighter been found wrapping shit in his gloves? The worst you see is St. Pierre putting vasoline on his face and back.

Right now MMA is easily beating boxing when it comes to popularity. But let's face it, boxing has been around as it was said before, over two hundred years or so. So it's not exactly in danger of dying. But interest in it has most definitely waned since MMA has become so big.

I'm nowhere near the age of a young adolescent and I like watching MMA a hell of a lot more than boxing. At the expense of starting a huge flame war on MMA vs. Boxing, MMA is way more exciting to watch than boxing is. If they were described in terms of dimensions, boxing would be the 1st dimension (hands only), and MMA would be the 3rd (hands, kicks, ground game.) Variety is the spice of life.
