Elmer's synopsis is pretty spot on. The game will be around for quite some time, the resources dedicated to it are just going to be reduced.
Of course, but at least there was the prospect of being able to explore new stuff when it came out. That was a major motivating factor for me and I'm sure a lot of other people. Not trying to be all doom and gloom, by the way - I'm still going to keep playing and see how things pan out. Would've been a good idea to announce this close to Rapture's release, though, since it might prompt quite a few people to stop playing at this point, understandably.
What's lower than next-to-none?the resources dedicated to it are just going to be reduced.
Maybe its just me, but when I heard of the new game I thought of this...

If you can transfer your character/equipment/etc to the new game, I'd give it a shot, but if FFXI is just going to die off all alone I'll probably leave it as my last MMO.
I changed the topic title to better explain the "replacement"
5 gil says the only reason this isn't 10+ pages is because most people are thinking "oh lord here's more OFN again"
That tech demo is from 2005, I don't think they had even finished making crystal tools back then. The game probably looks closer to FFXIII than that (although obviously scaled down a bit since it's online).
Wonder how far along Rapture is, since it looks like they've been working on it for a little over 3 years now and we still have absolutely no information about it (wasn't FFXI's initial development like ~4 years or so?). Maybe they'll say something at E3 this year (or, more likely, TGS) ?
I think they really are trying to kill their game by releasing this info when there's been absolutely no info on rapture itself. It's still at least a year away? Maybe more.
FF11 got LM-11
Sounds about right. If it's really been in production since 2005, that is at least a 2010 release earliest. Let's just hope this time they play it smart. If it's to be international, tell us straight off the bat that is what it is. Give us more info on the game then "We can't tell you. You should experiment on this unkillable boss keke ^.^" responses.
Edit: to clarify my response was about release, not "killing their game"
It's coming...

No company would ever try to "kill their own game" don't be stupid. They are still making money.
If they want the game over they can just shutdown the servers.
QFT
I may try Rapture out depending on the way SE goes with it, since I really don't want another "Lets make 21+ hour spawns and give them a 5% at best chance of dropping something" game. I'd rather have a MMO where my time doesn't revolve around when something decides to pop.
