"Rapture" to replace FFXI as premiere SE MMO... =(

While very sad to hear this news, we have to remember that they said they will only start full development of Rapture after FFXIII is done. FFXIII is not done yet so that's a few months more, then after that, it will take months/years to develop a full ready for public MMO.
So hopefully FFXI will still have a few years of life in it. I sure hope it does because I only started half a year ago, wish I had found this game sooner.

As for Rapture, I just hope SE will make it a proper unique MMO. FFXI's uniqueness is what makes it so good, it isn't a cookie cutter MMO, so I hope Rapture won't be either.

As to what will happen when Rapture is released? Who knows. Maybe we can somehow move our chars over, maybe Rapture will only be a complete overhaul of FFXI (haha we can dream can't we? xD)

I just really hope Rapture will have Tarutarus, otherwise it won't interest me I am afraid. >.>"

My adventury sense is suddenly tingly. I will probably play Rapture alongside FFXI and gradually "switch over".

Based on most people's thoughts here, they're wrong for wanting to support PS2 users because it's really only the JP populace that still uses it, which means they're showing favoritism and don't care for silly American's wants and blah blah Q_Q etc.


Anyway, SE had 3 MMOs under Playonline for quite awhile, FFXI didn't die or fall off the face of the planet, FFXI was the premier MMO. EverQuest has quite a few MMOs out (3 as well) and people play all 3 still when EQ2 is now the "main" MMO no secret about it. 'Rapture' will just take the spotlight to generate interest, FFXI will not be put on the back burner anytime soon, it could survive without NA/EU players as it wasn't even going to be released outside of Japan at the start so it can survive with another MMO under POL.

FFXI really ISN'T dying.. it's slowly losing its subscriber base as there probably arent enough new subscriptions to make up for the people who quit/get banned. And that is still far from dying. its natural progression in a MMOs life cycle.

And Square Enix isn't going to prematurely kill off FFXI either. anyone who thinks they'll do that lacks basic business acumen.

No profit-minded company will ever kill off their cash cow for reasons within their control. Thats just being stupid. In fact, on the contrary, they want as many of these as they can get.
Furthermore, FFXI carries the titular name of the company's biggest flagship. There is far more at stake than simply profits by canning FFXI. The image of the company, the brand, and also the reliability of SE as a MMO service provider would come into question if they did that.

It is for these same reasons that Everquest is still running today after a decade... and half a decade after its 'sequel' was released.

Rapture is in development since at least 2-3 years or more and SE just recently announced that they will present a new MMORPG title on the next E-3 or however that was called. Wouldnt be surprised to see the new MMORPG title ready in 2 years.

Rapture has been in production since August 05. It's only starting to ramp up now though. I still expect a release by Christmas '10, though I won't be holding my breath.

I think as much as people say they will not try Rapture based on all of the problems with FFXI, they will still try it. If it has the same allure of FFXI then people will keep playing it. I think the success of FFXI is that it has a big range of success and failure. Sure camping kings is hard, and sure people get frustrated when they lose claim. However just think of the feeling you get when you manage to get claim and get the drops you want, it is such a great feeling of accomplishment and success. I think this is one of the key reasons people stay and keep playing. No other MMO I've played offered this, and that is why I would get bored in about 1-3 months and go back to FFXI.

I'll definitely try this when it comes out, if it's as good as FFXI was I'll surely enjoy it. I might give it a year of development after it's been released though, gives the dev team time to make enough content so that I won't catch up too fast.. and to get rid of the worst bugs

FFXI Vanilla wasn't that buggy honestly, unless you consider certain things bugs that made no sense. For example ~aga spells going through walls/ceilings/floors, it made sense that it would since it is an area spell however it also didn't make sense at the same time. So you could consider that one of the "bugs"..so I doubt Rapture would be really buggy considering it's not restricted by the PS2 and it's been in development for longer than 3 years.

ffxi (II) woot. I will prob buy it the day it comes out, i wont sell or drop jeyman(myacc) on ffxi till i have a grip on how to play the new one. Also want to no that it wont fail.

If it ill fail. Hope not it looks much better then ffxi(and thats why i like ffxi dont look like a cartoon and for the most part the story is really nice)

how i see it is one of two things will happen

1) it does great 50% or so of ffxi moves right to it and they have 1mil+ people playing it right off the bat, FFXI has about a year left in it if that happens
2) it fails so bad that they drop it in less then a year, ffxi becomes their number one MMO again, they drop the ps2, make it look better for PC players and we get the upgrades we have been asking for the last 4 years.

dont get me wrong i love ffxi, its really fun, i fish i craft i kill some HNMs do most of the events in the game. but really i would not mind something new. SE also said that if ffxi does close down they are looking into ways to give players something if they move to the new game. What it is if anything SE did not answer, they just said "we are thinking about it" 10 gil its a Moogle Rod!

It really is just a game. you will move on and i bet about 90% of us will move to their next gen MMO if FFXI does happen to die.

Just have to answer to this, WoW is an MMO that is not for hardcore players(i guess it can be i got mad tho that i did not no anyone in the game and was like lvl 30 in less then a day)

If your a hardcore player, like about 70% of ffxi then WoW is not for ya. i just could not deal with wow myself. Just because wow has more people does not mean its the best.

We all know that more = better right? you get RMT /tells all day long in wow, hell they do them in shouts even.... you lvl much faster, you do not need a party, all this adds up to people who dont have time play it.is that bad not really, but they are not the same game hell they are not even for the same people.

you cant say anything is "best" it depends on each person. i think FFXI is the best. you may think WoW is the best.
