We were paying most of the contract but yes the Phillies were still on the hook for some of his money, I believe it was in the park of 10m for 2006/2007/2008/2009, so around 2.5m per year, so the phillies are responsible for around 2.5m/1 baseball season (5-6months) = $415,000

I guarantee you Frankie was only going to go in if the Rangers came back and it was a save situation or a tie. Otherwise, Grilli was the guy.

Dye and Thome weren't coming back in 2010 and everyone knew that well in advance of the Peavy and Rios signings. Those two deals were for 2010-2013 and beyond. 2009 was a wash

It's more that you made all those moves then basically gave up when you're 6 back with 30 games to play.

We were 2.5 back last week, and then went into the typical post all-star break white sox nosedive spiral into the ground. I think Kenny Williams was just sick of seeing the same shit since 2005 (Even that year when we won it all, the team shutdown in the second half and let a 15 game lead drop to 1.5)

We're the worst defensive team in the american league and have slipped to 3rd place in the worst division in baseball. 6 games back with the way we're playing, is pretty much the same as 10 games back at this point

This team as constructed has 0 chance of winning this division, even with Jim Thome (Contreras was terrible and we're better without him)

So overall, moving those two guys doesn't really change anything. Thome wasn't hitting and Contreras was the worst I've ever seen him

With all that said, I'm real excited for 2010. Our rotation looks studly, and I can't wait to see how long the leash is for Kenny with Reinsdorf's checkbook. Figgins and/or Crawford would be a great pickup and fill some holes we've had for the last 4 years (Slow plodders, No leadoff hitter, Poor defensive outfield)

Can't agree. You just got done playing in Boston and in New York, which let's face it, are on another planet right now and far outclass the AL central. That doesn't mean you can't make a run at the division still.

5 games left against Minnesota, 6 games left vs Detroit, and series against Oakland and KC mixed in there. With plenty of games left against the teams in front of you, I'd say that's far from "done". Just seems like a tough sell to me especially since you might get Peavy back soon and Garcia looked strong against the Yankees. Contraras stinks but Thome is a pro hitter and can change the game with his bat still. Just doesn't make sense to give up at this point especially when all you need is to get to the postseason where anything can happen.

Like I said, Thome isn't hitting and hasn't really hit at all since his multiple days off in interleague play. Yeah he can lean into a mistake pitch and hit a ball over the fence still. But saying that Thome would make or break our season as it currently stands is naive. This team is more/less just as good/bad as it was without Thome in the lineup

Hamels looked great tonight. Good for him. The guy's been having a string of awful pitching lately and it's nice to see him come to form. Pretty sure the Phillies don't care about how he pitches in the regular season as long as he sets the world ablaze in the playoffs again. I bet he will.

On another note about another pitcher, I'm happy that Tim Hudson came back and pitched fairly well considering it's his first Major League start since coming back from Tommy Johns. He's had his own injury problems going back to his Oakland days, but I hope he can stay healthy, pitch well going into the end of the year (I don't think Atlanta makes the playoffs) and then gets his option picked up and comes back to pitch for Atlanta next year. If Atlanta can resign Vazquez and Hudson.. I do like their chances next year. Wouldn't hurt to get another bat though. I like the fact that Lowe, Hanson, and Jurrjens are locked up for a bit though. Either way, congrats Huddy. Good for you.

It's quite possible that the Braves have the best 5 man rotation in the majors right now. I think they can still make a run if those guys can get on a pitching roll. I think McLouth comes back soon? So maybe that's the offense you need. I wouldn't count them out just yet.

If the Braves could ever sign a big bat in the offseason they'd be a powerhouse next year.
