Can he play another position? I mean he's a perennial gold glover behind the plate and that's one thing that makes him so valuable aside from the fact that he can hit.

He is the face of the franchise, might as well lock him up for that long if you are the Twinkies, but like I said they will almost certainly get more out of him if they play him at first.

Even NFL owners hate the Yankees! This from Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti:

"It certainly doesn't show up in the standings," Bisciotti said. "If I'm a Yankees fan, I'm upset we're not winning 130 games with the roster that they have and the money that they pay out. I think it's a disgrace they only beat the average team by 10 games in the standings with three times the money. I'd fire that GM. You don't need a GM. All you have to do is buy the last Cy Young Award winner every year."

Funny that any NFL owner would try to get people to focus on baseball with the issues the NFL is facing, but he's even wrong in more ways. Bisciotti is arguing for the salary cap, but his statement actually can be spun against it. After all, if a team spends exorbitant amounts of money and still can't buy 130 wins, then why cap the league?

And, yeah, his statement about GMs and buying Cy Youngs just show a complete lack of fundamental knowledge about baseball. I just thought it interesting that he even failed to make his main point.

Clearly, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti is a proponent of the NFL salary cap, and took a light-hearted shot at the Yankees during today's big news conference for their inability to totally dominate Major League Baseball with their huge revenue and payroll advantage over the other 29 teams.

He was joking. I thought the fact that he was exaggerating on some of the numbers and scenarios gave it away.

The Twins picked up Orlando Hudson which is a needed boost to the #2 slot. Span, Hudson, Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, Cuddyer may end up to be really nice lineup. They really needed someone to pick up the slack between Span and Mauer/Morneau.

About Mauer, I'm sure he could play any infield position or in the corner outfield spots without problems. The guy is an incredible athlete. Outside of baseball, he was the national high school QB/football player of the year in a few polls/sources and was a FSU recruit. I don't think he'd have much trouble changing positions. I know he wants to play catcher though, but hopefully he'll be willing to change positions if he gets a ridiculously long contract.

The fan base here would riot if he's not signed in any case heh. We got a new taxpayer funded stadium with a promise of increased payroll, he's the hometown hero, etc.

Although tremendously overpaid the last two seasons due to injuries, this contract would be pretty small and very incentive heavy, leading to a low risk, high reward signing. Even though he's injured until probably June, that could set up a pretty impressive 1-2-3 of Felix-Lee-Bedard.
