Laptop randomly shuttig off

Has been doing so for the past 2 days. Have no clue wtf could be the problem.

does it shut off and reboot or just shut off? do you notice it getting exceptionally hot? one thing you might try and see if it's throwing a blue screen by stopping it from rebooting and trashing the crash info. right click my computer, select properties, go to advanced, under startup and recovery click the settings button and uncheck restart on error. now if you get a blue screen, copy down all the information on it that's not just useless instructions (things like the stop code, etc are good) and post that here. that will help a lot if it gives us anything. if it doesn't throw a bluescreen, then it's more likely a hardware problem IMO.

Just shuts off, not reboot. It used to get hot and shut off that way, but that hasn't happened in a long time as I play with it on a box crate for plenty of ventilation (will shut off due to heat though if i play on a table or another unventilated surface). I went ahead and changed the properties, so the next time it happens, I'll report back here.

Random shut off is generally an indicator of a possible hardware failure or overheating. Could also be a simple/cheap RAM problem, but that'd probably cause random reboots.

Can be if you are running the laptop directly from AC adapter(without battery installed or with a dead battery).

Yea, its a shitty HP. I got it with 2 batteries when i bought it, which both died out in less than a month (and now i've had this pc over 3 years)

if the brick is overheating, it could be feeding bad power into the board which can cause really unpredictable results. also possible when it was overheating before it damaged the thermal paste or CPU causing hotspots of one kind or another. bad ram would just cause memory errors which would probably manifest in a bluescreen when the OS handles the massive failure. on the other hand, "ZOMGSHUTDOWNNOW" in my experience is the board itself spazzing and powering off to protect itself.

Dude. I have this same exact fucking problem. New PC is almost here thankfully. Had it for 2 years and it started doing this in october.

can rule out temp problems by using an app like speedfan to check the CPU temp. check what processor you have in your PC and cross reference it with the mfgr's website for thermal tollerances.

Heya this happened to me the past month (and I just fixed last week). Everyone was saying it could be corrupted memory etc etc. When I ended up asking a friend who is the guru techy in my book - he said to open my laptop, get a can of air (like the ones to clean your keyboard) and go to town on the inside of the the notebook. Sure enough when I did this, I saw this insane cloud of dust that had been accumulating since like June when I bought my Sager NP 2092. Since I have done this, my laptop has been running smoothly and no random shut downs anymore. I also got a cooling stand just as a precautionary measure.

Before you do anything else I would strongly recommend this.

My XPS laptop has the same issue. Battery died almost 2 years ago and I never bothered replacing it since I'm always plugged in. Several months back (just after the warranty was up) it started randomly powering off like you described. Eventually it wouldn't power on at all. Unfortunately I don't have a spare battery to test it with, and I don't really care to spend $150 to chance fixing it.

dust blocking airflow could cause overheating as we've suggested prior in the thread. there are easy ways to test this, though a good blowing out is a wise maintenance task every once in a while anyway.

Wasn't a problem for a long while, but on sunday it was really bad every 5 mins shutting off so I went and got the canned air and I haven't had the problem since. Thanks guys.
