    Cheapest desktop challenge

Inspired by the Why is this computer so cheap? and Best Cheap Desktop threads, but not wanting to clutter them with this, I thought I'd see who here can come up with the dirt cheapest desktop, assuming that there is no spec too low.

Doesn't matter how horrible it is, or if it'll run nothing but Linux. Only needs to include enough hardware to pass POST, plus a monitor, speakers, DVD drive, and networking capability.

    Here's my rough draft attempt:

    Case/Mobo, PSU, memory, w/ integrated video/audio/LAN ($146):

    HDD incl cables ($40):

    DVD incl cables ($20):
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch...iteria=AA25370

    Keyboard ($7):
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch...iteria=AA39360

    Monitor w/speakers ($90):
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch...iteria=AA73478

    Total: $303

    Who can do better?

You can easily do better, if you visit eBay and buy an old pre-built clunker, or stop in at a sizable secondhand shop.

    That aside...

    Motherboard w/Athlon 3200+ & GeForce 6100 ($40.99, round it up to $50 w/shipping): Newegg.com - Open Box: ECS C51G-M754 A 3200+ AMD Athlon 3200+ 754 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX Motherboard/CPU Combo

    80GB HDD ($39.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - HITACHI Deskstar 7K160 HDS721680PLA380 (0A32727) 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives

    256MB RAM ($13.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 256MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory - Desktop Memory

    DVD Burner ($21.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

Keyboard & Mouse ($14.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - IOGEAR GKM502 Silver/Black 104 Normal Keys 13 Function Keys USB Compact Desktop Combo - Keyboards

Case ($39.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - RAIDMAX Tornado ATX-238WR Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

    PSU ($40.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V Power Supply - Power Supplies

    Monitor ($119.99, free shipping): Newegg.com - Hanns·G JW-197DPB Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1(DCR 2400:1) Built in Speakers - LCD Monitors

Throw in a couple cables for a few bucks locally, and this comes to about $350. The important thing is that it takes shipping costs into account. Unless a fair amount of the hardware you linked to had free shipping, this would ultimately be cheaper, especially if you lived in an area where you wouldn't be taxed.

If you're not just playing around... I'd suggest retrobox: Intechra Outlet - Used, refurbished, preowned PC Computers, laptops and flat panel monitors

$75-$150 throw in a $100 monitor and there ya go(mostly corporate computers that were leased)

    Case + PSU

    MB

    uP

    Memory Stick x2

    HDD

    Optical

    PreTotal $216.93

I won't put monitor/keyboard/mouse on here because yeah, you can easily find cheapies there.

It even has the benefit of being really really small.

The forum changes the format of it's thread links, so they broke.

As for Kryssan's build, that makes me wonder, what would be a good small computer to fit under your seat in a car that could hook up to one of those car TVs (meant for watching movies usually) and into the car stereo system (if it has an mp3 player hookup)? Power would be provided by those 12v DC-> 110v AC inverters you can get (that can also be charged up like a battery).

Then, instead of just watching movies, you can do stuff on the computer, too, while on a long road trip!

Of course, you could also just get a laptop, but this sounds cooler.
