I love the outcry about stuff like this. It's just an animal. Sure it's fucked up and he clearly shouldn't be allowed to have pets, but it's still just an animal. I think it has more to do with the fact that we can 'see' a cat feeling distress/pain/etc.

It's an important distinction because if we (humans) can't or won't 'connect' with an alien (relatively speaking) 'entity' (whether it be a cat or a dog or even other humans whom we may differ from in things like culture/politics/taste in pizza toppings, i.e. pineapple) then how can we feel their pain?
