    0 apps.
    46 friends.
26 photos, only one posted by me
    0 videos.
Status updated whenever one of my bands has a gig. Free advertising.

I know a couple of people who've resisted signing up to the whole Facebook thing. I'm amazed at their strength of will. I couldn't do that, since it's free and useful for organising events.

My girlfriend had her password to her Facebook get ganked somehow and she's been locked out of it for a while. It changed her status to single, that kind of stuff.

But that's besides the point. I'm really wondering about why the change, and what they plan to do with it? Honestly, what would they gain from some poorly taken photos of random people from all over the globe?

If I got hold of them...

    1. Fapping material haha (at least this stuff is more real? I've seen some VERY nice stuff from friends of a friend...)
    2. I can think of several "captions" or "speech bubbles" to add to such photos
    3. Future advertisements? I can't think of anymore...

There's also this shitty thing going around lately with the "Notes" function, something about if you get "tagged" into the note you have to write another Note and tag someone else along with explaining 10-25 things about yourself, or something.

Sounds very phishy (pun-intended) to me.

Shouldn't they at least be able to offer a full termination/deletion for people who made their account before Feb 4th 2009 because they weren't offered to accept the new terms or not?

I don't have a Facebook account but it looks to me like they are covering bases for upgrades to whatever they do. Like change the format of their pages or something. It does say that they can use the stuff with the Facebook services or promotion thereof. So I don't think that you will see your pics on a Pepsi commercial.

It does specifically say that they can retain your data after account deletion in "archived copies" This doesn't give them the right to use it however they want, just saves them from having to go through each and every system back-up and delete a whole bunch of stuff everytime someone closes an account.

The last quoted section is referencing other sections of the TOS and I'm not gonna read through all of those.

I have always got the impression that Facebook was very forward with their content, almost virus like. How anyone could think that anything they put on there is safe and secure is beyond me. These TOS changes are simply showing that they got a new lawyer, nothing else has changed.

I used Facebook to network and keep my friends and relatives in touch. I've found tons of friends I used to go to school with and/or work with that I never would have found otherwise (without a lot of time I didn't have and some effort).

I'm not going to delete my Facebook out of protest, that's just silly. I just think what they're doing is a huge dick move.

I also don't update my page every 5 seconds or upload 300 pics of the same thing. I do, however, think it's really funny that they want ownership of anything you upload. Like I said. They were probably tired of people using the site to promote music/photography/videos and making money while they didn't.

A simple solution to this is to not post anything up on facebook you plan to sell, whether it be writing, videos, whatever, later on or want to market.

Also, they're going to have a hell of a time with pictures, because (or so i've had it explained, I could be very off base) theoretically after you take the picture you own it, and own all copyrights, Facebook, if they tried, could possibly get screwed for claiming any kind of copyright too.
However, this is a licensing issue, not a copyright. Copyright is automatically yours upon creation of something. What's happening here is that by submitting the material to Facebook, you're granting them a license to use it however they see fit. What copyright lets you control is unauthorized copying. Essentially, you're authorizing Facebook, by licensing to them, rights to do whatever they want with the content submissions. Nothing unauthorized about that; just incredibly distasteful, in my opinion.

Photobucket also needs a license to:

"use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers)"

in order to do exactly what you ask them to do.

Facebook needs this kind of license to even exist. Their software will modify your data to fit into their page format, they need to broadcast it on the net so others can view it, they need to do whatever friend things that they do, and stuff like that. These are all of the things that you sign up for. Not that I'm supporting Facebook.

Edit: Yay 100 posts! I wish it was a better post though.

It was definitely better when it was for college/university students only. I was always able to find people in my classes and get notes or people would set up study groups; it was really handy. It's handy now too for other things, but I'm watching what I post now; too much of my stuff is being owned without any compensation to myself. I'd rather pay to use it than have that be the case.

I'm pretty sure the article states that all new photos/whatever added are subject to the new rules, so all pictures/videos that have already been added aren't property of the site.

Not just you Shalyn, but man...people have a hugely overinflated sense of self-worth in this thread.

Are people writing novels on facebook or something? Who gives a shit?
